Re: Merlin Rocket - project or race ready

I have MR 3521, an Ovington built all-GRP NSM2, they are supposedly fairly good river boats. She is down to weight, sound and functional but a little scruffy, and some tinkering is needed to get the rig working as the mast I originally had with her was bent beyond repair, I have sourced a replacemen...

Re: Not really a classic, but...

Hi Jim,

It's sitting in my shed in Walton on the Naze, Essex.

I can be fairly flexible with collection timescale, but it does need to be out of the way at some point!

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/141462815603?ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1555.l2649 I bought this as a cheap source of parts for Tiger Moth (jibs and spinnakers are an exact fit, road trailer is perfect, daggerboard is a straight swap, etc) It's too good to cut up, but admittedly isn't worth ...

The only one of these I can make is the Banbury one in September. I'll try and decide between now and then which boat to bring...

Re: what to do when X factors on and the rest of rubbish

Easy solution to this one! In 2001, when I took up permanent residence aboard my old IOR one tonner for a few years, I threw my TV in a skip, and suddenly found that all the books I had been meaning to get round to reading were suddenly getting read, and the backlog of projects started to disappear....

Re: lowrider help

Best piece of advice somebody gave me when I was starting out in my first Moth was something like 'don't give up, don't get disheartened'. It took me the best part of a season before I could get in it for any length of time without swimming, but the end result of experiencing the lovely feeling of g...

Re: Wanted Magnum 8 or later

Could I cast my vote for Hunts? I'd obviously try and make it to any lowrider event, but realistically I'm far more likely to succeed around work shifts etc if I didn't have to put aside a day travelling either side!

Re: magnum 8 moth query

I agree entirely with what Lyndon has said- also one thing I have found with mine is that although it seems to be faster in a straight line to add more mast rake when the breeze is stronger, it compounds the problem of getting stuck in irons (and inevitably falling over) on the tacks- so there is a ...

Interesting... Is she advertised anywhere? I had a look on the class association site but couldn't see her.

Re: My Bucket list! (for fun)

I too have had a go in most of the things I would like to have a go in at some point, so the list is short- Flying Dutchman AC Relatively new Cherub (preferably Pasta Frenzy or Cheese Before Bedtime) 18' Skiff Not very imaginitive, I know... Could maybe add something like an RS700 or Musto Skiff, bu...

Nessa, do you still have the broken bits of RS800 mast you mentioned a while back, or have they been chucked?

Re: Off topic slightly....Westerly Nimrod

They were also built by Anglo Marine in Clacton on Sea, I remember seeing the moulds sitting out the back gathering moss when I was working there in the late '90s. I think Anglo Marine were the last builder, I believe (although stand to be corrected) that the moulds were sold by Westerly to somebody...

Re: Strippers (the paint removing kind! )

I know nothing about Peelaway, but some hopefully useful info on stripping paint in general- The active ingredient in Nitromors used to be a chemical called Dichloromethane. The EU in their infinite wisdom banned this, considering it unsafe for the user and environment. The 'new, improved' (yeah, ri...

Re: DO PROPRIETRY WOOD HARDNERS AND ROT KILLERS WORK

I hope those who have already posted don't mind me adding a little? You don't say whether the rot is in the hull or the deck? Has it rotted from the outside, or just end grain, or- one to be wary of- from the inside out if in the hull? If it is in the deck, then to my mind it really isn't worth savi...
