Re: Stain under varnish

It could well be stain. When I obtained Merlin 908 (1958) the decks had been stained and varnished, badly!! But what was worse it looked more like boot polish! I stripped back to bare wood and then used P40-60 oxide paper and a shed load of elbow grease to rub back to original wood colour. (Tip: gen...

Re: Getting a decent paint finish?

Preparation, preparation and more preparation! This finish is done by a very talented man called Steve Jevons who works with laurie Smart. The varnishing and painting is done by hand using a brush and brush only and a bloody good quality one at that!! :wink: http://www.merlinrocket.co.uk/gallery/vie...

Re: Deck Stepping Vintage Merlin

Thanks Ed,

Really interesting read an very amusing and the first time I have heard of a boat referred to as a HE!

Certainly intend to bring her to some of the CVRDA events when she is up and running.

I'll try and post some images of the restoration.

All the best

Re: Deck Stepping Vintage Merlin

Oh, I meant to add ....... Laurie (the one in the pictures at the bottom of the link page) is one hell of a good bloke, an amazing boat builder as you can see, and one of the very few remaining true professional WOODEN boat builders.

Re: Deck Stepping Vintage Merlin

Thanks for all the replies. As ever from this forum/site really useful and relaible information. I can rest assured now that I have done the right thing. Ancient Geek, you are right she is a 9, the C just represented Chippendale as the builder but it is misleading. Fortunately she has stood the test...

Deck Stepping Vintage Merlin

Hello! After some more advice please! :mrgreen: I am restoring MR 908, a Proctor IXC and have converted the boat to a deck step for a few reasons the most important to me being that I can obtain 2nd hand masts more easily that are set up for deck stepped rigs. To convert from Hog to deck step I have...

Re: Dulux Paints

I was quoted:

Weathershiled:

2.5l = £36.35

1L = £19.15

Dulux Trade:

2.5L = £27.15

1L = £14.10

So I suspect not a lot. The only plus with Dulux is you can mix and match colours which is a BIG plus.

Cheers :D

Re: Dulux Paints

Still labouring this one. Sorry!! Just spoke with Brewers and they advised that Trade Dulux paint is much far superior to the off shelf paint that you buy in the DIY stores. The off shelf kit is filled out with chalk which adds thickness but drastically reduces duarability wheras the trade paints ha...

Re: Dulux Paints

ED, Sorry to labour this one!! You made a comment in an earlier thread .... "Having now used the best Dulux paint for at least 4 boats that come to mind, I would have no hesitation in doing so again" When you say best Dulux paint are you referring to their standard gloss paint or something...

Re: Varnishing - again!!

And don't forget ( not many people know this) when you have finished varnishing instead of cleaning the brush each time you finish just get a paint kettle half filled with linseed oil and suspend your brushes over the kettle with about a 3rd of the brush submerged in the oil, gravity forces the bits...

Question....... it has a deck stepped rig and therefore has king posts from underside of deck to hog .... the problem I have is actually ...

Deck Finish - decisions, decisions!!

I am restoring MR 908 and have stripped the decks back to bare wood albeit it have had to fill a number of the old copper nail holes with epoxy plus some larger holes too havehad to be filled in the same way. Now the intention is/was to just varnish the deck albeit this whilst being original will no...
