Re: It's not an Enterprise... but what is it??

As someone who now owns 3 Ospreys, a full set of building templates and jigs and some plans and loves them all can I say you have made a very wise decision. There are plenty of better Ospreys out there for far less than the costs in materials that this boat would need. My mark 3 Claridge built Ospre...

Re: Transom draining flaps

I have just retrieved my late aunts sailing diaries from her flat in Broadstairs. She kept a record of every race in and modification to their Merlin Rocket 1088 right from collecting the part completed kit from Chippendale in the winter of 1959. In the first sail they half filled with water and so ...

Re: Work on Planet, N12 N672 1948

Michael, Was there still a wood shortage in 1948, when this boat was built? With regard to the plank lengths. My father built a sharpie in the 50s and had to go up and down the street buying peoples wood ration tickets from them. The only wood he could find readily available was 6 foot "coffin...

Re: Gel coat.

Really all depends what you are trying to do. I would have thought 40 grit would be removing stuff rapidly and leaving scratches - do you mean 400 grit? If preparing for a paint job I wouldn't go that fine - possibly up to 240 grit. If fairing up a repair I would work through the grits from 120 up t...

Re: cutting out plywood decks

It's easier than you think - providing you are renewing the outer gunwhales you only need the centre foredeck join and the small join on the side decks to be precise. Try and use the factory edge of the ply sheet for the foredeck join. Plane a slight undercut angle down its length so with the curve ...

Re: miracle rubbing strip

I normally use sapele on miracle gunwhales. Mind you mainly because the timber yard across the road from my workshop lets me dig through their offcut pile and there is usually a few bits the right size there. It also does the job well which is a bonus.

Re: plastic inspection hatch sealant

You also have to think about removal - might you want to take the fitting off again? Sikaflex can mean the fitting is never going to be removed without damage. For tank hatch covers on a wooden boat I might want to remove them for varnishing so would tend to use a bog standard silicone. It is just a...

Re: miracle restoration

The Class rules prohibit hatches on the deck. They should be on vertical bulkheads. It is easier to fit as the surface is flat rather than the slightly curved deck. If I was at your stage with my restoration, I would bring the bulkhead aft to the cut away bulkhead. Gives more buoyancy and much easi...

Re: wood glue or epoxy ?

With plenty of clamps no pins needed at all - I use those cheap spring clamps you find in pound shops. I have seen it done with C shapes cut out of ply and timber wedges. Round the outside the deck fits over the inner gunwhale section so clamping is easy. There are a couple of ways of doing the cent...
