Re: Identification of a classic 16ft dinghy
She is clinker built, wide spacing of ribs is perfectly normal & typical of Uffa fox designs, the close spaced ribs were used on carvel & multi skinned boats. I wonder if she is a North Norfolk 16? Discussion on the fb page at moment. I had not realised it was a development class so differen...

The mould for the GRP version was chopped up a couple of months ago so there wont be any more glass ones now.

Re: Good Mastic for clinker seams
I have spent most of my career working & mending boats many of them clinker built, I also rebuilt quite a few. The practice of "Hardening up" existing fastenings is more often than not a short term fix & rarely works. Copper fastenings corrode & waste away, forming a crust of v...

Re: Good Mastic for clinker seams
The Evomastic i have always used is just frame seal natural, they might have put a number on it!
As for Linseed oil putty forget it, as the oil dries out it goes rock hard, this will destroy a clinker boat as the seams will be forced apart eventually.

Re: Good Mastic for clinker seams
The only mastic i would use on clinker boat seams is Evomastic, it is oil based, soft & never really goes hard. As the boat takes up in the water it will squeeze out & causes no damage. It is also cheap!

New update on Dixie. I bought Robbins 4mm gaboon ply, cut the panels 1" oversize & my friend Veneered them in his works veneer press with some lovely sapele veneer bringing it to 5mm. While i was waiting i burnt off the last of the paint & found two bad planks halfway down the topsides....

Re: 2-Part Polyurethane Paints
Over the years i have used a fair bit of two pack polyurethane paint. I have sprayed it, brushed it, rolled & tipped it. International 709 i never liked, it tended to orange peel unless thnned heavily. Hempels is good & the last boat i built a 28ft rowing gig was done with this, she looked s...

Out of interest Uffa fox did his apprenticeship with the Saunders company, not sure if this was SE Saunders or after it had become Saunders Roe. They were famed for their patented Consuta system of planking, (sewn plywood) this was the pioneer of very lightweight multiskinned construction first used...

Re: Advice on owning an Uffa Fox International Fourteen, ple
Re sanders, never ever put a belt sander on a wooden boat, they are hard to control & shift a lot of wood quickly, they also take the heads of nails just as fast! A bloke i know did this to a lovely 18ft clinker dinghy & basically took the heads right off 90% of the nails. Basically the boat...

I love these old 14's, we have one in the roof of our club house she is Destiny no 526? built in 1947 by Souters apparently the last one built the same way as yours. She had sat outside in the open & her bottom planking was nearly rotten & badly distorted aft of the plate case. No way of fix...

Update on Dixie, was it really 2014? Better get my finger out! I put her in my workshop last winter & have made a good start, the Stem turned out to have a patch of rot & this extended into the apron so both have been removed & replaced. The deck turned out to be 1/4" marine ply so ...

Re: rowing scull
I raced against a two man Virus yole some years ago, sliding seat boat. We were in an 18ft traditional boat, (hanningfield skiff) we thrashed it by miles. The virus boats tend to have wide flat sterns that drag, plus the riggers are very weak.

While on the subject of Dayboats, Back in 1977 my late father Ron webster & i built a DB, no 596 Phantom II She was glued clinker & a lovely boat. We sold her to a bloke surmame of Williams in the mid 80's. I seem to remember he came from wales. I heard that he stuck her indoors & she ha...

Re the Swift road trailer. It came from one of the last Swifts built which was sailing at Benfleet in the 90's. I did some work on it & the new owner abandoned it. In the end he gave her to me but she was too far gone so was scrapped about 7 years ago. The trailer was put in the dead trailer par...
