Repairing a ships name

On receiving my Mk II Firefly I was a little more than disappointed to find that its name was ‘Dylan’ asking in this forum about its genealogy, to then find that it was possibly to do with the Magic Roundabout children’s TV show was at best a sad moment. But then… I Wiki’d me the tale of Dylan ail D...

Re: Power tools

I was surprised to find the instructions for the Argos budget sander suggests maximum 30 minute cycles with a 30 minute break, I thought this to be sufficient - then found how therapeutic sanding is. The 'finish to die for', for me is satin however absurd that may seem, deep gloss in my mind seems l...

Re: Power tools

Many thanks Keith, thats a welcome (focused) response to the question, I guess you must've pasted that in from the other forum... I am close to getting a good quality (nicely priced) compressor 70-100 PSI, 5-7 bar I',m guessing this isn't big enough to run the Sealey but may be good enough to run th...

Power tools

I am looking to invest in a sander and have had quite a few conflicting views attempting to help guide me through the maze. The work being done is primarily finishing plywood. So... if V=I/R etc, should I be looking at the wattage, voltage the brand name, pneumatic, 110V...? My own experience in the...

Re: Danish Oil

The brand I have is Rustins, its seems entirely the case that what ever I thought this was going to be, it is actually a varnish indeed!

Danish Oil

I have come-by a job lot of this, it seems (they recommend that it is) like a good primer for painting plywood, any experience to the contrary, or advice on how best to use it, beyond the makers instructions?

Re: Forensic help needed - Firefly

Dylan has horizontal planking on the external surface but the herringbone version on the inside, which can be seen in the photo. There is something of a school connection, she recently came out of Bryanston Schoool in Blandford Forum, though I have no evidence to the effect she was part of a trainin...

Forensic help needed - Firefly

The attached photos are of a recently acquired Mk 2 Firelfly which I am trying to identify the sail number for. Any ideas on how to bring the number out better without destroying any evidence as part of the very early stages of this restoration project? There doesn't seem to be a number before the '...

Re: Painting plywood

Thought I'd try an intuitive approach to posting the image:
The plan is to varnish the transom and the foredeck etc, only painting the hull itself. From a brief forum scan I see G4 is well regarded, and the use of Nitromors is not frowned upon, great news!

Painting plywood

My Fairey Firefly has had some very unsympathetic hull patching done to it and I am keen to get it on the water as soon as possible, is there any accepted wisdom, best kinds of paint/undercoat to use for this job? Anyone able to give me a Mk number for the boat would also be useful, I think it might...
