Re: Old fireball no 66 found

Hi Keith, Glad to hear FB66 has survived. She was indeed built by Chippendale but, I seem to recollect, decked out by an amateur. She kept her original name of 'Clickiticlick' down the years and competed in one of the early Nationals doing rather well. I owned her for a few years with a view to rest...

Re: Players Ciggy Cards

I think I've seen the picture you refer to (in Emsworth?). I have a framed reproduction (1997 first published in 1938) set of the cards in question - 25 in all. The series is entitled 'Racing Yachts - a series of twenty five from paintings by Charles Pears, R.O.I.' and covers dinghies, keel boats an...

Re: ISOs etc

One of the largest and most active Fireball fleets in the UK is on your doorstep at Hayling Island SC. Why not pop over and have a chat? You'll find a broad mix of people: those who cruise and those who race (from beginners to serious international sailors). We also have a wide range of boats from v...

Re: Yet Another 'What is it'...

"but the centreboard case dosent seem to be right (the snipe is semi daggerboard , not pivoting..." For what it's worth, the Snipe I sailed as a boy at RAF Changi YC, Singapore, had a pivoting centreboard. I believe it was built by RAF personnel so could easily have departed from the rules...

Re: Nationals Results and Participants, '50's, 60's, 70's

I came across three full sets: one at the National Maritime Museum, one with Y&Y and one at the British Library. I used the latter but editions have to be pre-ordered for viewing as they are stored remotely.

Fireball results may be found at:

We are missing full sets for some of the early years but are gradually filling in the gaps.

Re: Interesting...

Nick Mason certainly sailed a Fireball. He was a member of Dell Quay SC where his father, Bill, also sailed a Fireball (FB189) and was Commodore for a period in the late 1970s. Perhaps mistakenly, I had always thought Nick's last Fireball was FB9117 'Honourback' which he bought from Ian Gray and tha...

Fireball 66

Hi all, Those of you with good memories will recall I gave away Fireball 66 a couple of years ago to a new owner who was keen to carry on light renovation required to get 'Clickiticlick' (a really original 1962/3 'transitional' Fireball i.e. fitted with trapeze in 1965 but never upgraded to carry a ...

Re: CVRDA handicap relationship to Portsmouth.

Hi Wimbleball, In the Fireball world your boat will be viewed as a 'Classic' (there is a definitive list of 'classic' sail numbers on the UKFA website). Essentially, 'Classics' are narrow-bowed whilst all modern boats are 'wide-bowed' and markedly quicker. The Associaton makes no distinction between...

"There is a rather tatty and sad looking one at Copnor on Chichester Harbour! Is that in the 5 - or does that make 6?"

I saw Hit #9 sailing past Bosham SC during the weekend. Possibly the one David refers to?

Re: Trolley wheels

Hi Michael, Standard inflatable trolley wheels are best for DQ especially since you'll (most likely) be keeping your boat in the lane so it's a bit of a haul to the waters edge. You can get them quite cheaply via mail order from the larger chandlers, from Emsworth Chandlers or perhaps from the one j...

Re: Jollyboat

I presume 'Compression' refers to size of sailing water required rather than storage?! Storage is my problem and, I suspect, one shared by many others. Otherwise I'd be tempted to collect interesting examples of various classes but not necessarily with a view to racing them (bit of thread crossover ...
