Re: Advice on carbon mast fittimg

I am wondering: what do carbon fibre spars have in common with classic and vintage racing dinghies?

Re: Ply for Albacore hull repair

Here is a good London supplier of veneers http://www.capitalcrispin.com/veneer_index.aspx if you go to the bottom of the linked page they list their construction veneers, but sadly it does not list Agba. Give them a call, they are very helpful. 1/16" = 1.6mm approx. They will deliver by post.

Re: Changing sail numbers

I have used acetone applied to the reverse side of the sail to soften the adhesive, peeled the numbers off and then a wipe with acetone to remove the residue.

Re: Vintage film

There are loads of wonderful films on the East Anglian Film Archive (EAFA), here is another sailing related, Manningtree Regatta 1973 http://www.eafa.org.uk/catalogue/856

Re: Harry Curtis Hall and International 14 history

Rod we are already in contact as my I14 Tiptoes K521 is that 1948 boat designed by H Curtis Hall. I too would like to learn more about this, seemingly, little known designer.

Re: International 14, epoxy or not?

Thank you all as ever for taking the time to reply. It has been very helpful to me to achieve a few decisions:- I shall not use epoxy for any sort of coating or as a means of bonding the hull stucture together. I might use it in a few localised areas to repair breaks in timber that were always inten...

Re: International 14, epoxy or not?

I thought the name Tiptoes rang a bell and so I looked back at your previous posts last year and see you were given the boat by a certain Clive Charles. What an extraordinary coincidence. I sailed with Clive back in the late 60’s and indeed recall a memorable thrash across the Solent in his old 14 ...

Re: International 14, epoxy or not?

The image shows the double width "garboard" inboard of the bailer hole and adjacent to the keel, split in its centre along the line of the hog inside the hull. It also shows the 2-3mm shrinkage gaps in the plank edges.

Re: International 14, epoxy or not?

I would be very careful about your idea of leaving her in a lagoon to “take up”. This might be beneficial on a carvel hull but would I suspect simply make matters worse in this case. My reasoning is to do with the anisotropic behaviour of wood e.g its tendency on changes of moisture content to swel...

Re: International 14, epoxy or not?

My heart and conscience say no to epoxy, apart from the repair of a few broken elements. I appears that the joints were simply caulked with white lead originally, prior to varnishing. I would not think of using that evil material, but perhaps some other form of soft filler might help. It would be di...

Re: International 14, epoxy or not?

Thank you very much for your replies, I know that the ultimate decision lies with myself; but I was just trying to sound out to find if there are other choices. By sailing I really mean racing and if racing I do not want to be going around the course bailing continually (she only has one smallish te...

International 14, epoxy or not?

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I am restoring my vintage International 14ft racing dinghy No. 521 Tiptoes (1948), built by Uffa Fox Ltd. The carvel hull is ribbed and the "planks" are nailed. The outer planks (veneers) are 3mm thick and lai...
