Re: I wonder what this might have been.
That reminds me of something that no-one I knew could identify sailing off Portsmouth on the Beken calendar a few years ago. Caption said "Greek letter"(Lambda, Omega...not sure) class . It looked loosely Westmacott (X-boat/Victory.....etc). Was gaff rigged and looked like no current Solen...

Re: Bloody Mary
Interesting to see you say "should have taken the Minisail". I thought about taking mine (on top of a rib a friend of mine was sending up as a safety boat) but realised that I was too late to add it to the list of classes. I then found another friend had given away her Topper which I also ...

Re: Newbie signing on
The floor boards in 2289 are (sacrificial) softwood. Would guess pine. They are in complete lengths not in two bits as shown in the picture of 47. The inside boards have brass turn buttons so you can take them out.
Re: Plans
"the GP14's adoption of the genoa, which at a stoke turned the boat from a mixed crewed boat to one needing a beefy strongman to be competitive." I keep trying to find female helms.....(that makes me a beefy strongman?) I'm still not competitive but at least I can blame someone (as oppose...

Re: New to CVRDA
Adding to the list of known Planker Hornets, my friend Phil has his dad's 1958 example. It's in pretty original condition apart from the 60s Holt Allen Mast. I've been trying rather hard over the last couple of years to get him to sail it! He's sailed the aubergine L***r more and even that's only be...

Re: Wooden Minisail
Well in answer the answer to where I was sailing is neither, I was in Portsmouth harbour. The it was a north easterly and the tide was still coming in, which explains the short sharp sea. I was broad reaching at a point where the boat went over most of the waves but realised I needed to gybe to get ...

Re: Wooden Minisail
My minisail is of the standard Richmond Plastics orange/white fiberglass variety. I think sitting out aids were legal on all minisails/sprints provided they were removable, so technically I suppose you could have racks, although I've never seen one (and sounds impractical on a boat with 4" of f...

Re: Unknown sail
Interesting, I'm not sure which boats they are. Date-wise that falls in between the Portsmouth Sailing Club "Wyllie" Dinghies of the 1930s and the Stormalongs of the 1950s. This could of course be another club's one design as most local clubs had its own one design boat. From the Hardway s...

Re: Unknown sail
Hi Sami, Back in 2003 Portsmouth Sailing Club held a "heritage evening" to try and inform younger members (like me) of club history, record what the older members could remember (before it was lost) and clear up the rumours and speculation. From the discussions of that evening the followin...

Re: Unknown sail
Yes I am referring to the Portsmouth Sailing Club Stormalong. There were definitely 2 rigs the racing rig and the cruising rig. 'Smuggler' (I can't remember the number) was owned for may years by the late Peter Stewart, who's son Bob currently (along with myself) runs the Sea Scouts. The last we hea...

I have enough trouble keeping my boat watertight, I think air tight might be impossible!

Unknown sail
Whilst having a tidy in the vintage boat bits grotto that is the scout hut and having found the expected bits of 1950s oppies, wayfarer sails and spars from Stormalongs etc I found in a rotten bag a gaff with a cotton sail rolled round it in rather nice condition. It has an "S" with a dot ...

Re: What did you learn today?
I'm in Portsmouth. I'm not sure quite how local that makes me. My rudder is also awful, but hopefully will last the rest of the frostbite series (along with the sail that won't let me go up wind and the interesting mast bottom section which appears to have been internally sleeved with a tree). Still...

Re: What did you learn today?
I learnt that a cut down centre board from an early oppie is definitely not strong enough to take the forces placed on it by the minisail of doom in a force 5. I suppose I have also learnt what I shall be doing with a plane and lot of my spare time for the rest of this week.....
