Re: Pierre Marique's "Europa" vs Alois Roland's "Europe"
Thanks for your input Lasertourist. Is Cristalli still in business? I believe he worked for Roland and eventually took over Roland's business. From what I understand he was the woodworker of the pair while Roland was the designer and also a skilled metal worker. I have seen only one Roland Europe he...

Re: Pierre Marique's "Europa" vs Alois Roland's "Europe"
Thanks for the replies. I'd love a wooden Roland and would be sorely tempted if I lived on your side of the pond! As for the Lanaverre Moth, there's one for sale in Virginia and I've posted some pix of that boat on my blogspot: http://mid-atlanticmusings.blogspot.com/2015/06/a-french-moth.html So, g...

Pierre Marique's "Europa" vs Alois Roland's "Europe"
The basic lore surrounding the Europe dinghy is that Roland's Europe was a tweak of Marique's Europa design. I've looked in vain for photos or better yet, line drawings to compare the earlier Europa against the current Europe. My question is what are the differences between the two? I may be incorre...

Note that the orange hull (Mean Tangerine) using sail nr 2721 started life as a Mk I Skol.

Re: Moth pics
How wide is Mint green on deck? If close to 5 feet then she might be a Mistral or Duflos with added tubes and tramps to give more righting moment when using the tall Aussie rig instead of a circle-M rig. The Mirage was quite narrow and needed wings no matter which rig was used, although by the time ...
Re: Moth pics
I may be wrong, but the mint green hull with tubes and tramps looks like a Derek Chester design called "Mirage". The Mirage was basically a skinny version of Chester's better known stitch and glue "Mistral" design which, in turn, was derived from Benoit Duflos' elegant but diffic...

Re: Knee protection
Has anyone got a recommendation for knee protecters that stay put, I have tried a number of different pairs but I always seem to end up with shin pads. I have a pair of expensive kevlar material covered ones 'designed for sailing' but these are no better. All those have been tried with dry suits an...

Re: Here's that Moth.
Anyone attempting a restoration of the Skol with the transom drain needs to pay close attention to that item. I briefly had one of these boats and unknown to me the tube separated from the hull. This in turn allowed water to quietly leak inside the compartmented hull unbeknownst to her dimwitted own...

Re: Snipe?
The Snipe is an international class which got its start in the early 1930s: http://www.snipe.org/ Perhaps more numerous here in the western hemisphere than in Europe. Yep, the boat in the flea-bay auction looks like a Snipe to me.

Any photos of the hull to document her before she goes to the bonfire?

Re: "Ladies" Finn rig for sale
I wonder if it would suit a Moth designed to take a free standing rig, such as a Europa or low aspect rigged Duflos? The mast would need to be roughly 18 feet long and the boom 9' 6".

Re: yet another moff on the bay!
Very early (or even the first?) Magnum 3 from late '76/early'77, with the footwell cockpit and ribs bracing the flares as on the M2 (but you can see the overlap of the chines at the transom). If that's the sail that matches the boat, it was sailed by Richard Hargreaves to 2nd o/a in the 1977 worlds...

Re: 1939 International 14...Free to a good home!
I'm glad I'll 3,000 miles away or this boat would be way too tempting for my own good! She'll be a ton of work to restore but there can't be very many ribbed I-14 woodies left. I hope she finds a good home.
