Re: Skua 'Ysolt'

Up for sale again, I do not know if the vendor is the person I sold Ysolt to. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1960s-Skua-Sailing-Dinghy-GRP-Racing-Sail-Boat-Trailer-Drop-Keel-Sails-Mast/142825591438?hash=item214111928e:g:C7IAAOSwVL5a5hb6 I think the price might be a bit high! Also of course Ysolt is all ...

Re: Finn Needlespar Mast repairable????

Thank you Ed - I will try that (so that my cracked mast can become a useable spare at least). Happy morning at the club today getting the mast set up. I did decide to cut the 10mm off the foot rather than move the ring, as it looked to me to be very messy - breaking out two large old self tappers wo...

Re: Finn Needlespar Mast repairable????

I'm going to need a hacksaw and a steady hand. Clearly not all Finns have the same dimension from mast step to deck ring - with the mast heel on the floor, the ring is only just (2mm) engaged with the deck ring.... I have looked at moving the ring down the mast, but it looks like a terrible job and ...

Re: Finn Needlespar Mast repairable????

The Finn Class came to the rescue - Martin had a spare needlespar in his boat shed. (Also a lovely Finn in restoration).

I hope you have a sturdy (10mm) shock cord to pull the plate DOWN when you are sailing? It stops the board slicing its way back into the slot as the boat rolls over.

Re: Capsize aid.

Righting line and a short length of garden hose to make the 'stirrup' stiff enough to get your foot in works very well.

Lovely!!! I've not got room for another wooden boat in my fleet - sadly.

Re: Mirror impact repair

Tape - is standard woven glass tape. To get it to stick to marine ply - prepare ply (dry, dust free..). Paint a thin layer of mixed epoxy onto the wood (extend beyond the width of the tape) and then apply the tape (which you will have cut to size in advance). Then stipple plenty of mixed epoxy resin...

Re: Finn Needlespar Mast repairable????

I think a welder would be your best bet but if you're really stuck the remains of Needlespar still exist, I think they're trading under Hawk (the wind indicator company) and although most of their work is making Finn and OK booms they may be able to assist. They seem to still be making spars for ma...

Re: Finn Needlespar Mast repairable????

... horizontal or vertical crack? what's the section like, could it be sleeved externally? hi Jim... its a horizontal crack. External sleeve probably ineffective as its not far above the deck ring, so little metal to weld to below the crack.. It might be an approach though. The Section is standard ...

Finn Needlespar Mast repairable????

It was blowy last night and a lot of fun... But when I was packing my Finn away I spotted a crack on the front of the mast. There used to be a fitting there (associated with the kicker, but now redundant) so there is a drilled hole, and the crack is about 2" long centred on the hole. Wish I'd taken ...

Re: Halyard wanted for Classic Finn with Needlespar mast.

To keep sailing while pending getting a wire one made to measure then dyneema with a knot tied in it to engage with the Vee-trap would work. It could not be replied upon to last very long though. However, you would be able to make it up on site yourself..

Re: International Canoe K89? Back on ebay.

I've been fascinated by this boat for a few years. The owner comments that the sliding seat "doesn't fit" but it looks to me as though a new seat carriage has been built that has not understood that the sliding seat has a curvature as the seat carriage appears to have a flat profile,... so the seat...

Re: Atlanta Vario

One could think that with the price of dinghies rocketing to ridiculous heights it would be a good idea to revive the DIY stuff...but no.. nowdays top class carbon fibre-vacuum bagged- aerospace specs...etc 505 need such a level of skill and tooling to be competitive that a DIY boat would be doomed...

Re: Bowmoor event

If there were any loaner minisails available I can think of people who might be tempted... I'm hoping to trundle the Finn over to that meeting, and/or Tom's N12 (The Spider).
