Re: Advice on owning an Uffa Fox International Fourteen, ple

Have been following this topic with great interest, as I bought Nimbus K316 (reg.1934) at the EISCA auction, as she had belonged to my father. I'm not competent to do the work on her myself, so she's awaiting professional (sympathetic) restoration, nevertheless the construction of these boats is fa...

Re: Advice on owning an Uffa Fox International Fourteen, ple

Looks incredible. Never having seen a boat like this in the flesh, do all the nails you can see go through hull into the strips/laths of wood you can see in your earlier post ? All of them apart from the garboard nails, which go into the hog. Someone calculated that there are 7,000 nails and 100,00...

This is where we are at: https://s20.postimg.org/x1p25t6bx/IMG_4307.jpg Yes I know the graving piece doesn't match; it's teak cos I'm clean out of pre-War Honduras Mahogany! After six coats we are only catching a few nail heads with the pad sander and 320 grit ( the only sander allowed near her!) so...

Re: Classic International 14 for sale, and advise please

What other racing dinghies were there at Lowestoft....waiting to go to China? eib Almost all of the boats that had been in Lowestoft originally. Very few had been collected by British buyers - the honourable exceptions are: Minisail & Gull 1 (Jolly Roger) - back to the Proctors. Hope - museum and r...

Re: Classic International 14 for sale, and advise please

I went to Lowestoft yesterday and Tony very kindly showed me the boats waiting to go to China. Including quite a different NEGAUNEE, lighter build with a very wide (as compared to Uffa Fox boats) transom. .. She was omitted entirely from the sale listing. https://s20.postimg.org/lmmm1bpsd/IMG_4286.j...

The Herreshoff Dinghy has a similar rig.

Re: Can I ask advice on an old I14 mast...

Finally got all the attachments (spinnaker cleat, burgee eye and cleat, fixed gooseneck, three cross trees and two parrot perches) off the mast. It looked like the Wrath of God after scraping off the (black, opaque)copal varnish- black patches everywhere. You can't scrape Sitka spruce, so after some...

Re: Advice on owning an Uffa Fox International Fourteen, ple

After spending a couple of hours looking at this board, scraping, sanding and applying a first coat of varnish, it finally dawned on Alex and I that its made of different stuff to the rest of the boat! The fixed blade, duck's foot, rudder matches most of the rest of the boat and is obviously made fr...

Re: Advice on owning an Uffa Fox International Fourteen, ple

I am interested in the "boat soup" mentioned above for old plank re-hydration, I think Ben Her could do with some of this, what is the recommended ratio of linseed oil to cuprinol, and, having let this mixture soak, is any preparation then needed prior to varnishing or priming? On that last note I ...

Old chemical stripper tip, applicable to Nitromors - brush it on and put a sheet of kitchen foil over it - stops it evaporating.

Re: Advice on owning an Uffa Fox International Fourteen, ple

"There's a reason why I started with the outside!" Seriously, very interesting. This thread should be re-titled "Chris's master class on the care and feeding of the Vintage Fourteen!" Experimenting with the inside of Galatea, the ancient varnish seems to dry scrape quite readily; indeed in many plac...

Re: Advice on owning an Uffa Fox International Fourteen, ple

Thanks very much, Chris. Your untangling of the maritime archaeology is compelling. It must have been a roller board and indeed Uffa Fox Ltd have amongst their drawings for 1946 boats one marked "roller in case" along with one marked "Mast jack" and one marked "mainsheet block" and one labelled "goo...

And this is Negaunee: Bill, this may be "old news" to you but there is a reference to NEGAUNEE in the history pages of the UK Fourteen website: http://gbr.international14.org/history/1923-1989/the-years-of-challenge-1946-1955/ "... The P. O.W. Cup itself was won by Thunder and Lightning sailed by J...

Re: Advice on owning an Uffa Fox International Fourteen, ple

Looking good! Is that a bronze roller just visible at the forward end of the centreboard slot? Yes, it is, and it is a puzzle! Can you elucidate? The centreboard has a slot, closed with wooden piece that is held by a single roundhead screw. The pin is a stainless tube captured by two screwed in sta...

Here we are after the first five coats of Epifanes Gloss Varnish: https://s20.postimg.org/dgap3ugjx/IMG_4260.jpg Nail heads still standing proud https://s20.postimg.org/om9lijg3x/IMG_4262.jpg And the seams in way of the wych elm garboards are still gaping.
