Re: National Rally - who is coming?

Can I apply for a late entry please? I have managed to escape from a rescue duty at home club so should be ok for the nationals weekend now if you have room for another old moth and driver! my Trolley Dolly refuses to camp so looking for accomodation. Travelodges on A14 seem to have some rooms but m...

Re: Moth Tuning

Black bands could be legitimately moved up as they are related to the luff length rather than a maximum height. Halyard???? Considered uncool in Moth circles! The boat falls over anyway so feed the sail in while its lying down. only a short loop of thin line up and over the top and back to a hook ne...

Re: Moth Tuning

Mystery moth looks smart, is that a new paint job?

Yes, i think the battens are too stiff, particularly the top ones.
Outhall is too tight, or maybe the boom is hanging low because sail is not up to top of mast?

Re: Moth Tuning

We would organise a day at Greensforge, but its difficult Moth conditions at the best of times. surrounded by trees and only 17 acres. Still, if you can sail one here you can manage anywhere!

Re: Fireball Refurb

That looks like a lot of work, good luck! To answer your questions I would suggest leaving the sander alone until you stripped the paint using a hot air gun and scraper. Use as little heat as poss and a pull scraper with the grain trying not to dig the corners in. Sanding the paint will just clog th...

45 degree headers are the ones you might see coming, anything more is a guaranteed swim!

Re: Moth Tuning

I agree with all suggestions so far, a bit more rake, tighter downhaul, induce some bend in the mast etc. As a puddle sailor mothie myself, I consider tell- tales and a burgee essential for survival, but I can't see them on your photos. 2 or 3 pairs of tell-tales near the luff (about 30% back) will ...

Re: Who's coming to Roadford

Yes, looking forward to mothing at Roadford.

Don't know about all that pumping business in Finns, I spend all my time trying NOT to wobble!!!

I'll have a small ox (already far too heavy for a moth) and a veggie ox for my Trolly Dolly.

Re: Roadford Lowrider Moth Handicaps.

Yes, I'm coming to Roadford with my Magnum7, and hopefully a 1 metre R/C as well if it still works. I fixed the hole in the side of the moth before going to Saundersfoot Coppet Week with the Fireball. Back at the weekend, Fireball washed and put to bed, Moth re-assembled and sailed at home puddle on...

Re: international moth wings

Not surprised at the price for tramps, they always were an expensive item. It is possible to make your own, and they can be very strong if you reinforce the edges well before fitting the eyelets. I made a set for my Magnum using the Trampoline mesh from Kayospruce 188cm wide . Profabrics is similar....

Re: Roadford Lowrider Moth Handicaps

Thanks for the invite Alan, I am hoping to get to Roadford. I have some repairs to do on the Magnum 7 as I cracked the side of the hull during a capsize at Chasewater recently! Gaffa tape has held ok since, but rather fix it properly. I have to preserve the paint job too !!!! Is there camping on sit...

Marine Ply Offcuts

Boat builder having a garage clearout, we have quite a lot of small offcuts of marine ply. Ideal for repairs. Its all top quality Robbins gaboon and sapele ply, mostly 4, 5 or 6mm. All odd shapes, typically triangles, some up to 18" long. Its far too good to use as firewood. Anyone need some for cla...

Re: Express handicap

Yes I'd agree with 1150 they were the same rating as a Graduate (124 in old money) when they were built in the 70s. We have a large photo on the wall in our clubhouse of an Express open meeting which was an early promotion for the class. I remember our top Grad sailors trying them out but they never...

Re: Classic Handicaps

While on the subject of handicaps can I offer a list of age/design related Int Moth ratings... This guide was written by the legendary Hydrofoiling Pensioner, Colin Newman in about 2005 and was supported by IMCA UK as a fair conversion for older designs to be sailed in handicap events. PY Numbers fo...
