Re: "Ugliest dinghy ever" contest

I have mixed feelings about the sail karts like the escape , the funboat and so on ... they do their best in simplifying the very first hours on the water , but then there is little scope for skill improvement because they are too tame... IMHO they may prove their worth in beachfront clubs , boat r...

Re: "Ugliest dinghy ever" contest

This one is maybe not completely ugly , only bizarre and tweaky (think it is the brainchild of the US arm of Hobie cat) http://www.leboncoin.fr/nautisme/778452856.htm?ca=12_s Proves that the idea of a windsurf rig on a dinghy still has some believers ...and as it is a US design you probably have so...

Re: Hamble Stars

My first ever race was in a Hamble Star...number 97 owned by 83 year old 'Pop' Ward. Little Jib was ok for a 9 year old but recall more about bailing as the topsides, in particular, leaked frighteningly! There were self bailers but this was mostly with a glorified gavanised frying pan! My sister was...

Re: Dinghy show

Feedback from Paul Hollis was that the Merlin stand was three or four deep all day saturday and only marginally quieter on sunday with the traditional class stands all really busy. I think the worm is turning back towards the older, established (and better) classes but lets face it, unless theres a...

Re: K89

I will take some pictures and get them online. I can't find anything on Proctor canoe designs, as you say, she could be a different hull... There's no number on the hull but she came with 2 sails: one K89 and the small one K133. Mike - when I got her the sail that was originally with the boat was t...

Re: Pulley ratios.

You cannot just count the strings. A pulley block attached to the ceiling to lift a weight has 2 strings, but gives no mechanical advantage. A pulley block attached to a weight gives a 2:1 advantage when you lift the weight, and still has 2 strings. The difference is that some pulleys just turn the...

Re: Pulley ratios.

Or to elaborate a little....the 'strings' between the pulleys not including the rope to hand thus making this 3:1 Were you to add a 2:1 to the 'rope to hand' part then this would double the 'purchase' making it 6:1. I once had a ridiculous kicker system on my Enterprise that utilised a 7:1 lever bar...

Re: Long term wotisit project

Quite possible Jim, the guy that I got it from thinks he was only the 2nd owner and he bought it in '97. I must confess I bought unseen from ebay with the thought that the trailer was worth what I paid but the craftsmanship (and he was a shopkeeper, not a tradesman) is outstanding. Sadly she's been ...
