Re: 'Sharpening' cam cleats and no bung holes

Glad to help.

More room to move in the garage now, just got to move on five motorbikes and a van and I will be able to get a boat in!

Edit to add; Wife says its six motorbikes - she's been looking again.

Re: Mast section.

When you are 'in irons', remember 'push and push'.

That means push the boom out and push the tiller away from you and it will come round and you will be on the correct side to sail away.

Re: 'Sharpening' cam cleats and no bung holes

I'm off out sailing today but will hunt them out later or tomorrow and let you know what I've got. I can't promise anything but how many do you need? I think I have some with fairleads and some without I will get onto it and let you know. Edit to add, I have three the same as the ones in your pictur...

I was tempted at 0630 this morning when it first appeared but knew my wife would have asked the same question.

Glad it is going to a good, kind and caring home.

National twelve handbook 1936 - 2000

As I no longer sail National Twelves and I need to free up some bookshelf space my copy of the handbook is available, £5 posted to uk address. It is A5 size with 252 pages in nice clean unmolested condition.

Re: So which boat should I be looking for?

If you do look at Solos avoid early GRP hulls, they can be very floppy, overweight and more trouble than they are worth and that would include early composite ones. I had a GRP one from the late 1970's which was a horrible thing, the hull had wood moulded into the GRP for the hog and floor stiffener...

Re: Trolley wheels

I agree pneumatic tyres are easiest over most surfaces, go for 16" if they will go on your trolley and not foul the boat supports. I use the cheapest I can find as they all suffer from sun damage and splitting after a few seasons. One of my current pair got a puncture and I was suprised to find...

Re: Old cherub spinnaker pole...and possibly a few other thi

I know nothing about Cherubs but in Solos the early seventies we were using half inch wide fibreglass cruciform section battens that were tapered so that when they were bent they gave an aerofoil shape to the sail. How wide are the batten pockets and how long do you need? I have not looked but I mig...

Re: 'Sharpening' cam cleats and no bung holes

I have tried sharpening tufnol cleats with limited success, I found that the type of rope had more effect on the grip available. Old style soft cored matt rope gripped better than the newer hard rope. I eventually replaced the cleats with newer one which solved the slippage problem. As I remember I ...

Re: solo on ebay, worth it?

Whilst I don't know all the facts about all the boats, the winner of the wooden boat prize came 49th (out of 130) at the nationals. The sponsored jockeys sail the latest boats with all new equipment and 3DL sails, which might explain some of the difference. There has been some rule exploitation with...

Re: solo on ebay, worth it?

There are some good Solos for sale at the moment, I sold mine that was 12 years newer than the ebay one for £850 with a good combi trailer and three club racing standard sails. I would keep an eye on the Solo association website http://www.solosailing.org.uk/fs/fs_list.asp but be ready to move as th...

Re: My Footy.

Back in about 1972 there was a National 12 that had no rocker and a very deep, fine bow, apparently it went well inland on flat water but it went through the waves rather than over them and was very wet and slow on the sea as far as I can remember.
