When you are 'in irons', remember 'push and push'.

That means push the boom out and push the tiller away from you and it will come round and you will be on the correct side to sail away.

If you do look at Solos avoid early GRP hulls, they can be very floppy, overweight and more trouble than they are worth and that would include early composite ones. I had a GRP one from the late 1970's which was a horrible thing, the hull had wood moulded into the GRP for the hog and floor stiffener...

Back in about 1972 there was a National 12 that had no rocker and a very deep, fine bow, apparently it went well inland on flat water but it went through the waves rather than over them and was very wet and slow on the sea as far as I can remember.
