another good point BUT......here's a class that is lost by any normal definition. There's no Class Association, they've dropped of the active classes 'radar' and those boats that still exist tend to be those left, sad and forgotten (like the boat in Chippenham) in a dinghy park. If the Express doesn...

Thanks for the info so far, I've been tracking down the forum strings elsewhere. Sadly, Ian Harris, the son of the designer, has changed his email address so it's proving difficult to get any more detailed info. An interesting concept though - to get around the VAT one hired the moulds and built the...

Another lost class for Sale on Ebay. has anyone got any detail/background to the Express? I know that the boat was sponsored by the paper of that name (cor, how times have changed...... a dinghy sponsored by an empire built nowadays on smut!) but does anyone have more in the way of information on th...

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm, I guess it would have been equally valid to have asked 'what's RIGHT with a Spearhead'????????? Having had a look again at Ebay the Spearhead that's currently listed there is still to attract any bids, it would be a shame if this boat was 'lost'. The trouble is, it's a big boat, not...

Rod, if I've time this week I'll drop into David T's and see if Ican get some further details on the Nova. If my memory serves me well it was more like the Callaghan Harrier - a bit merlin like with a flared hull. No great suprise there bearing in mind MJ's past Nat 12 and MR designs. I don't think ...

I'm not sure Rupert, I had a look at the Marlin and while it's a million miles from an out and out 'screamer' it's got some nice underwater lines - for somewhere like Chippenham a boat that like, with it's lower wetted area. spinnaker... if not carrying too mauch weight, well, could be useful! Havin...

10 of of 10 to JohnK - yes, it's a Silver Streak, from the same drawing board as the Phantom!! I do hope someone picks this up - a real coup for the 'lost classes' wing. Regarding some of the other comments made in this string - I've now completed the article on the Ghost and Typhoon, it should go i...

sorry jim...........don't think it's a kestrel. I know the early ones from Gmach's had that sort of mainsheet horse on the stern but it looks a tad short for a kestrel.

Could it be a Beaufort? (early Proctor GRP boat)

Already emailed the seller - am awaiting a response. One thing is for certain - Marlin is NO! I've found out that we have one, that sails (big suprise there) at netley so that's another possible crossed off the list. Don't think it's a kestrel, bow looks wrong as does the sidetank/foredeck shot. I d...

THis one could almost be worthy of inclusion in the 2006 quiz.

Had a hint of the Kestrel about it....but too small and the sidedeck seem wrong. Lots of boats it MIGHT be.....this one may set you reaching for the Dinghy Handbook!

Chris,
I'm seeing David T next week - do you want me to get 'chapter and verse' on his view of shutes.
In the interim - as an idea, check out early 505 pictures and see if they're carry shutes..... that or FD's, they're the two that lend themselves most to the layout.

Rod, Fair point about the canoe building BUT........ go back to the late 60's - early 70's and there was a whole cottage industry revolving around self build dinghies. Peter Milne was 'the man' - with the Fireball and then the Mirror 14 and even well into the 1980's people were building competitive ...

Chris, Delenbaugh was sailing a ?????/ - will have to get the name, a pretty looking boat not so dissimilar from a Finn. It had a sleeve luff (shades of things to come) and according to DT could be very quick indeed when the rig was set right - sadly this was quite difficult to acheive so the boat o...

Chris 'et al' Spent a very happy hour with David Thomas going through his Unit stuff, he's got the lot right back to the original line drawings done for Chippendales to lay up the first hull. Chippendales did that in wood, as usual with sycamore inlay, it looked a lovely bit of kit. Then we went thr...
