Re: miracle restoration
If moisture gets in the ply it won't dry very quickly, especially in the winter and then you will find the outer paint bubbling and lifting.. Yep, inside a tank is a great breeding ground for rot and so on, its warm and humid and so on, and very rarely really dries out. Water will migrate to the ou...

Re: miracle restoration
have been thinking about the bow tank and painting or coating it with something , paint, varnish, epoxy etc etc, and i'm beginning to think this is the wrong thing to do, ok at first it will look great and you would think , ok that's sealed nicely , but, over time your coating may crack, and you may ...

Re: miracle restoration
Fair comment about storage. Does your Miracle have the kingpost support set infront of the mast? If not this is a modification worth adding as it stiffens this area and stops the foredeck joint opening up when the jib is tensioned. Also while you have the foredeck off, lift the bow up and run a 'pu...

Re: miracle restoration
The Class rules prohibit hatches on the deck. They should be on vertical bulkheads. It is easier to fit as the surface is flat rather than the slightly curved deck. If I was at your stage with my restoration, I would bring the bulkhead aft to the cut away bulkhead. Gives more buoyancy and much easi...

Re: wood glue or epoxy ?
lots of ways to hold down decks whilst gluing..... Bags of sand work well. Lengths of wood off the ceiling work well too. Also, tieing down with inner-tube bands works well. use your imagination! :-) cheers eib Speaking of imagination , candles , lino , and a bucket helped cure the epoxy under the ...

Re: 'Sharpening' cam cleats and no bung holes
I have sharpened the tufnol mainsheet cleats on my Finn, but the biggest improvement was from stripping them down, cleaning them out and using a lubricant. It is the case though that they don't grip as well on modern hard ropes, but I now only get a bit of slippage in strong winds. I put up with th...

Re: miracle restoration
The first and biggest patch so far has been put in place with the best 45 degree angles i could muster with a stanley knife and my sander , cemented in place with epoxy and seems on the face of it to be very solid although the fit was not brilliant, the epoxy made up where i failed. Going through th...

Re: wood glue or epoxy ?
will still need to pin down the bow decks as they have a slight curve to them , but good point you make about epoxy , i can use a lot less pins than i would , if i were to simply use glueGraham T wrote:Epoxy - then you don't have to pin it down....
