Re: Cold moulded Faireys

Cold moulding for high end yachts - wood heaven. A Spirit 100 in cedar and double diagonal khaya. I suppose if one is being pedantic this is not strictly cold moulded as it is built on its frames rather than a mould but who cares when it looks that good. On an historic note I have always assumed tha...

Re: 1937 UFFA Fox AFTERTHOUGHT No. K 371 on Apollo Duck

Hi Ed I don't know this one but I know what I paid for K380 Lancing (also Uffa Fox 1937) - probably too much but then with real classics there is no established market and it often comes down to "you've got it and I want it"! Comparing the two, Lancing was in excellent condition (see attac...

Re: Wooden tiller(s) wanted

Thanks for all yours. I am afraid Swindon is a bit out of my area so I won't take you up on that. I take the point on making a new one!

Wooden tiller(s) wanted

I am looking for one or more 1.25m or thereabouts wooden tiller(s) with or without extension. If anyone has something suitable for sale I would be happy to pick up anywhere on a "straightish" line between Mid Wales, Leominster, Worcester, Coventry, Cambridge, Woodbridge.

Thanks Robert

Re: International 14 K792 'Toccata'

interesting that he is still a buyer. Do you know what other boats he will be showing at Beale Park?

Robert

P.S in the interest of finding a rig for the Fairey 14 I have been offered a Proctor mast/boom from a "classic" flying fifteen (as yet unseen) - would that work?

Re: International 14, epoxy or not?

I thought the name Tiptoes rang a bell and so I looked back at your previous posts last year and see you were given the boat by a certain Clive Charles. What an extraordinary coincidence. I sailed with Clive back in the late 60’s and indeed recall a memorable thrash across the Solent in his old 14 T...

Re: International 14, epoxy or not?

I would be very careful about your idea of leaving her in a lagoon to “take up”. This might be beneficial on a carvel hull but would I suspect simply make matters worse in this case. My reasoning is to do with the anisotropic behaviour of wood e.g its tendency on changes of moisture content to swell...

Re: International 14, epoxy or not?

I suspect an epoxy coating (let alone a scrim) would be a big mistake for this form of construction. No doubt it would seal and stiffen things up a bit in the short term but because of the inherent movement would probably result in cracking in the future with the attendant problems. I have a 37 Uffa...

Re: Lowestoft Dinghy Collection

coming back to this one I read in Classic yacht this month that part of the Andrew Thornhill collection is to be relocated to the Tithe Barn at Beale Park and that according to the spokesman Stephen Walters "we're planning to have racing dinghies and river boats in place for the show weekend&qu...

Re: Fairey 14

thanks for yours. I was quite relieved that the photo was not Maelstrom as I didn't think she had had a complete rebuild besides which I still have this thing about the positioning of the knees over the thwart rather than at the aft end of the tank as in earlier Faireys - Shock 1956 (T Vaughan "...

Re: Fairey 14

Thanks Ed - fascinating stuff. I did manage to get a used copy of the Vaughan history a couple of months ago via Google Books and it has been a great help. Incidentally I paid 19 but notice that the cheapest now is over 90; perhaps the boats will follow! I also have some photos of the Barilea restor...

Re: Fairey 14

Thanks for yours. I am inclined to think that the long tanks on K680 although rebuilt are on the original pattern. My (rather tenuous) reasoning is a) that she was built after the 1955 rule change allowing increased buoyancy b) the positioning of the knee on the main thwart is forward from the earli...

Fairey 14

As something of a newcomer to the forum I would really appreciate help with sorting out my Fairey 14 K680. When I bought her the hull was in good shape but because in the past she had been used as a yacht tender many of the original components (rig, rudder, mainsheet fittings etc.) and associated se...

Re: Lowestoft Dinghy Collection

hi ed As I think you know I did go to see the collection a couple of months ago and have posted a few photos on https://picasaweb.google.com/rmeastham/ThornhillCollection?authkey=Gv1sRgCPvy7NrnzIinVg My main reason for going there was check some fitting details on Fairey 14s and in that I was disapp...
