Disposal

I have a "guilty secret" L***r sitting in a boat park and paying a worthless berthing fee, as I never use it and when I last looked at it, the deck finish has become "powdery" and there is a separation developing between the hull and the deck affecting most of the port side. (No ...

Re: Proctor C mast repair

I would think that the length of the internal sleeve needs enough to spread the point loading of the mast over about 18 inches either side of the join. Think of boats that come with a 2 piece mast such as a L***r  I doubt the stresses on an Otter rig will much exceed the stresses seen on to...

Perchance to dream.

I would only be allowed this if I cleared out boat sheds, both garages and my study. To be fair it would probably give me more than enough challenges https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Flying-Dutchman-Sailing-Dinghy/192861113384?_trkparms=aid%3D111001%26algo%3DREC.SEED%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20160727114228...

Re: Buss and Elston info please

I think we would need to see an image or two. When you say a moulded hull of 12foot length.....made in similiar way to the Mozzie....and connections to Uffa Fox, you can really only be talking about a Uffa Fox designed Fairey 12ft Firefly. These were made in the 1940s and most would of been finishe...

Re: Minisail No 10

The boat is very sound, including the decks, but due to some discolouration in the varnish I will strip the deck back to bare wood. In the process I don't want to cause any discolouration of the mahogany ply which is really beautiful, so am trying to decide whether it is best to use a heat gun or p...

Re: Graham Cockle auctions

Well, it has got me thinking about another Finn. SA 276 is no longer on the market, but I'll keep on hunting I know of a wooden Fairy Finn that is in need of some TLC here in Gosport. I can take a good look at it in the next day or so and let you have photos, find its number etc. (It also has the o...

Re: Mast carrying on vans

I recently talked to the secretary at Eton Excelsior Rowing Club about the possibility of borrowing a rowing tailer and he was very keen to help. A small cotribution to club funds would have sealed the deal. At this time of year there aren't too many regattas althogh there are quite a few head races...

Re: Mast carrying on vans

Do remember that in France the rules are much tighter on overhangs. Check (with AA or RAC for advice.) There is a strict limit on how much the load overhangs both the Axle (front and back) and the lighting board, A pain in the neck for rowing shells but most dinghies on a trailer (including the mast...

Re: Trolley tyres

If you want thicker tougher tyres you are best advised to get "Lawn Tyres." (As used for sit on mowers or miniature garden tractors. These can be 16,18, or even 20 inch dimeter and can be quickly found on ebay for @£30 - 60 a pair. (If you are lucky you might even find some used ones at £1...

The rules on Racing Shells (eg Sculling boats) are here: (Scroll down to page 122... https://www.britishrowing.org/upload/files/Association/WaterSafety/TrailerDriving.pdf ...and apply equally to sailing masts. The key is to mark the ends with a flag at the back and I use a reflective cone (as found ...

Re: Swallows and Amazons.

Err, excuse me but we seem to have wandered some distance away from Swallows and Amazons. (which inccidently was repeated again last week on TV.) If we get the apple a little closer to the tree, I might prefer a digression onto this films genre cousin "The Railway Children," if only for th...
