Re: 'nother old moff
Nessa, I assume you won as there was just one bidder. I hope you'll post some pix and your thoughts regarding this mystery Moth once you've had a chance to put her together and go for a sail. It will be interesting to see how she stacks up against well known benchmark low aspects designs like the Sh...

Re: 'nother old moff
Surely a boat of this vintage a 67" wide isn't actually an International Moth - weren't they 60" max at that time? No. While the CMBA indeed currently has a max beam of 60", back in the time frame in which this boat was built the IMCA had no limitation on beam. It wasn't until the ad...

Re: 'nother old moff
Probably best to park the extra pix of the boat on a blog spot or a photo sharing site and then post a link to them.

Re: 'nother old moff
Has anyone figured out what design this Moth is? Are Dobsons still in business? If so perhaps they may recall the details. Finally, am I missing something?--I keep looking at the photos and inspection ports and/or drain plugs for the bow tank and side tanks seem conspicuously absent. One assumes tha...

Re: 'nother old moff
I looked in my old copy of Paul Elvstrom's EXPERT DINGHY RACING (published in '63) but while the boat on page 17 is a chine hull (designed by someone named Eric Willis) she is NOT the design seen on ebay. But at least we can rule that one out. Any other ideas on what type our ebay mystery Moth might...

Re: 'nother old moff
I agree with the dating. Us 'mericans were still in control of sail numbers in the 2600 series (and a bit beyond that). I'd date this boat to the mid-1960s. One of the old Paul Elvstrom books in my collection mentions and has a photo a British chined design that looks similar to this boat. I'll look...

Re: I.M. K3517
Sami: if you look at the head photo on my blog spot (http://mid-atlanticmusings.blogspot.com/) take a look at my old Dorr Willey-built Moth sporting sail Nr. USA 112. That sail is a Europe dinghy sail which has had the fat head trimmed off so that it's legal under our rules. However, the luff and fo...

Re: IT is here SKOL MK III FOR SALE!!!
Yes, there's a fair amount of luff curve in a Europe sail to suit the bendy free standing mast, but for day sailing it shouldn't be a problem on a stayed rig and assuming there's a bit of bend in the mast, a Euro sail should work when racing as well. I've used Europe sails on stayed rigs (admittedly...

Re: IT is here SKOL MK III FOR SALE!!!
Sami: Our experience with Europe dinghy sails over here is that they tend to be a good ten inches short in leach length compared to a purpose built low aspect Moth sail. This is not all bad news, particularly if one is sailing a Moth which has retained the original boom height (12" above deck)....

Re: IT is here SKOL MK III FOR SALE!!!
Well I'm coming late to this discussion, (broke an arm while ice skating--too long a story to type with one hand), but yes a Europe dinghy sail will perfectly fit low aspect Moth spars. It should be easy to find a good used one at an agreeable price now that Europe dinghies have been kicked out of t...

Re: Early Int. Moth info.
Sami: Apparently the Skol was offered with a pivoting centerboard. An ad from the 1969 IMCA-UK yearbook mentioned two models--the Skol SL and the Skol Regate (one design). The Regate was billed as having the same hull shape and deck lay out as the SL but was heavier and stronger and also came equipp...

Re: Early Int. Moth info.
Many thanks for posting the links to the Moth archives. I'd seen them when they were on-line but didn't know how to find them after they'd disappeared.

Re: Early Int. Moth info.
J: Thanks for the feed back. I was under the impression that the Mk III had a different hull shape than the Mk I & II Skols but that both Mk II & III Skols were open transom boats. Perhaps someone can post a few clear photos of the various Skol marks showing the details. The Hoople looks lik...

Re: Early Int. Moth info.
Mk I or Mk II? I can't profess a deep knowledge of Skol Moths but perhaps someone within this group can educate me. I will first offer up my limited, direct knowledge of these boats. Back in early 1970s four Skol Moths were imported by sailors at the Ocean City (New Jersey) Yacht Club. These boats w...
