I have used surf wax. Found it tended to wash off quickly where I wanted it and didn't where I didn't and quickly looks unsightly. Took me hours when I wanted to remove everything to repaint.

Hi Matt Have you looked at the NAtional 12 web site, you will find some useful information there. If you are on a light budget I would be warey of a clinker built 12 either glued ply or traditional nailed as they tend to be an awful drain on cash just keeping them on the water. I need a lifting rudder for a 1980s Merlin Rocket, I have found my fixed rudder just a bit too deep for my pond resulting in some embarrassing situations. I am not looking for anything fancy but needs to be fairly cheap.

Steve it sounds like your new mast has come off a double bottomed boat for there to be so much difference in mast length. A mast from a later single bottomed boat might be a few inches shorter but not so much to make it un useable with out extending.
