Re: Uffa Fox International 14 designs

What is most surprising from this thread, to me at least, is how fluid the parentage of the various "Uffa Fox" fourteen designs, particularly in the Fairey Marine era. It is almost the marine history equivalent of "Who Wrote Shakespeare?".....Charles Currey? Alan Burnard? Alan Vi...

Re: A boat of beauty

Jim, Definitely not a New Zealand One Design scow Moth. I have the plans to that and it has a completely flat bottom. Not sure if the New Zealand Moth is now in the Lost Classes Category. My last correspondence has some still racing in Stewarts Gully YC Christchurch (no clue where that is). I do hav...

Re: A boat of beauty

From Fairey Marine/Uffa Fox I-14's to scows. Brit Len Parker, now living in Florida, sent me this link. I agree, it is a pretty boat but entirely illegal to the Moth rule when it was built. Moths (this one was built pre racks so we will date the build to the mid 60's) couldn't have hollows greater t...

Re: Uffa Fox International 14 designs

Very interesting. The Fairey 14's were a design progression instigated by Curry et all. There is really no historical record of what is different from a Fairey Mk1 I-14 and, say, a Mk10. How many of Uffa's lines plans of I-14's are archived? Certainly Avenger and Alarm hull lines are well known but ...

Re: Uffa Fox International 14 designs

Shoot from the hip and then do some research. From Tom Vaughn's history Fairey Mk1 appeared in 1949. The last Fairey was built in 1962. There were 12 models with the original modeled after Uffa's Martlet design. So did Uffa supervise each Mk tweak or was this a shop modification promulgated by unkno...

Uffa Fox International 14 designs

I have seen International 14 designs listed as a Fairey Marine Mk 10 which I assume is an Uffa Fox Mk 10. I don't think I've seen somebody break down the various Uffa Fox International 14 designs into chronological Mark versions. I guess someone in the past did if they came up with a Fairey Mk10. An...

Vintage Firefly on YouTube

I thought this might have got a mention on this forum by now. Vintage Firefly video on YouTube. I'll send you through my blog but if you want to go directly to YouTube, double click on the image should do it (if you have set your browser up to launch another window). Two of the comments were trying ...

1969; Forty Years On

In writing my blog, a light went on that 1969 was a significant year in dinghy sailing history.

With this forum chock full of historians, there must be other 1969 events that also should be noted.

Toe in the water; I've got a blog

I've started a blog. Probably keep me busy in the winter months but will rapidly devolve into disuse during the sailing season. http://www.earwigoagin.blogspot.com I've shamelessly stolen a very clever boat name, I think was used on a Merlin Rocket ... but those CVRDA historians can set me straight....

Re: Which Singlehander?

Great thread. 40 kg. still puts you in Optimist range. All other boats in discussion need at least 60 - 70 kg to at least plod upwind in a breeze. Scow designs such as a Topper are brilliant as some of the posters have pointed out. Stable, good performance in a breeze. The British Moth is a hybrid s...

Re: Int Canoe for Sale K102 - Torment

Surprisingly, in a steady F3-F4, in a straight line, an IC is much less work than a Laser. It's the corners that tend to bite the newcomers and even the old timers. There is so much going on in a tack, it takes some practice to get it all down without.... 1. coming in off the seat and getting blown ...
