Gelcoat is heavy, i just built a 16ft rowing skiff & it takes 6kgs plus of gel to do one coat, add another 6kgs of flowcoat on the inside & it adds up rapidly. The upshot is gelcoat can be a significant percentage of a boats weight.
Leave it off & paint it & the boat will be quicker.

We have a Ryobi battery drill at the school where i work & its quite good, their jigsaw isnt! it has a design fault where if you are on its right hand side all the dust blasts straight up into your face from the cooling fan slots, horrible thing. Best tools i have are a Bosch jigsaw bought new i...

Cotton Mainsail

Handicaps are a can of worms for sure. My other half has records of the BYC Nore race going back donkeys years, this is a 16 mile race round the Thames estuary & over the years has been very well supported by both dinghies & cruisers. Trouble is we have found over the years that its not alwa...

Re: YWDB
Well we went down to Leigh today & got the DB of the boatyard roof, it was more than a bit hairy with a block & tackle hanging of one of the forks of their forklift truck, we shoved her out over thin air until she nose dived of the roof good job the mast post was strong as thats what we tied...

I cant see how you will find any rock elm, as its been unobtainable for years. You may be lucky & find the odd small supplyfrom someone who has hoarded some! I wouldnt use ash as its durability is awful. There is an alternative timber in Black locust, otherwise known as false acacia, it is recko...

Re: Restoring a Yachting World Utility Pram
My first boat was a 9ft Yw Pram, great little boat. I remember running out of the Medway in my Dads Liz 23 she was towing behind, it was wind against tide & rough, the dinghy came charging down a wave & ran straight into the stern of the Liz, bouncing up the retrousse stern & nearly endi...

Re: new Fairey Boats???
Re the Fairey workboat, A friend owned one down at Old Leigh, I did a load of work on her in 1985, she was 17ft long by about 5ft wide & a very pretty hull. She had a Fairey builders plate & was fitted with a morris vedette sidevalve. She became derelict & last time i saw her about 6 yea...

Re: Oscillating Multi Tools?
I had a Fein multimaster for many years it was a very useful tool but blew up on me. It turned out to be a faulty component (capacitator) & a new one was fitted. It too blew up. That was the end of that. My father had one of the same tools that he never used & passed it to me. That too blew ...

Has to be a flying proa, too much stress on it otherwise, built one years ago, most fun you could have with your clothes on!
