Re: 16ft Dinghy restoration begins
I have spent some days this week laminating a full set of new deck beams for her and building a cradle to hold her straight & level. I am surprised that she has not gone out of shape at all. I suppose you have to have a bit of luck once in a while!

Re: Cherub on ebay
Years ago i bought a written of Cherub, a Forman Hot Dog, she was beautifully built all varnished with sapele ply & sycamore inlays also had a heart inlaid on her foredeck. Her keel was split from end to end & i glued her back together & put a new case in her. She was a stunning boat.

16ft Dinghy restoration begins
I have made a start on my unidentified 16 footer, might be 30 years late but better late than the bonfire! Got her in the workshop yesterday & she is blocked up of the floor, got to let her dry out a bit but she is now pretty clean. I am trying not to think about the thousands of rivets required...

Canadian Rock Elm or alternative
I am trying to source some Rock elm for timbers in my 16ft carvel dinghy (as described in another thread) I know it has basically been long unobtainable in the UK and oak is likely to be the only practical alternative. However the boat is so finely built i feel i must try to source the real thing! A...

Re: Unidentified 16ft sailing Dinghy
The transom was replaced about 25 years ago by my dad in the first go at restoration its iroko, trouble is it doesnt match the mahogany so may have to be either replaced or veneered over. I am fortunate that some years ago i aquired a quantity of Honduras mahogany from a barclays bank that was being...

Re: Unidentified 16ft sailing Dinghy
My boat had the number 2 on her mainsail the other boat was no 3 or 4 so there were a few others.
I have worked on many boats over the years & only rarely come across one so well built, looking forward to getting stuck in!

Re: Replacing damaged planking
An invaluable tool for working on planking scarfs, taking rivet heads of etc is a Black & decker Powerfile like a mini belt sander with a 12mm wide belt, good on plywood too.

Unidentified 16ft sailing Dinghy
Right i confess, I feel guilty! I found this boat 30 years ago in Aldeburgh suffolk, she had been written of following a sinking while racing. No one there could tell me where or when she was built save that she was built before WW2. Her name was "Spoilsport" not a name i would choose but ...
