Re: Merlin Rocket Proctor XVI MR1711

Thanks to everyone who expressed interest in 1711 - the boat has now been withdrawn from sale. Hopefully I'll be able to bring it to a CVRDA event this year.

Merlin Rocket Proctor XVI MR1711

Would anyone be interested in this 1964 Merlin Rocket? It is, as the title says, a rare Proctor MkXVI, which I understand sought to combine the best bits from the heavy-weather specialist MkXV and the all-rounder MkIX. It was built by Chippendale. It is varnished inside and out - I revarnished the d...

Re: Xmas Advent Calendar- Guess the Boat

It's not the old 'Wild Front Ear' is it?

Don't remember that one being self-draining. I think it was yellow when I sailed against it a few times back in the 1990s. IIRC, it was designed with some 505-like features.

Re: sounds like a vintage 14

Brilliant, I'm so glad someone has taken this on. After going to see it I knew it would be too much for me, and although there seemed to be a lot of interest in the boat, I still harboured a sneaking fear it might end up broken up. Would love to get progress reports as and when!

Re: Merlin on ebay

1711's number is on the centreboard case, and is pretty prominent. If anyone wants me to have a look at the eBay boat FWIW I can try to get over there.

Re: Merlin on ebay

Sacrilege! Anyway, I am now the proud owner of MR1711, so this craft here will have to be enjoyed by someone else. The (previous) owner ensured me if I hadn't bought it last night he would have stripped it this morning and burnt it in the afternoon. It already has a spare rudder and centreboard from...

Re: Merlin on ebay

Typical. I'm from Southampton and am going to Kent later today with a view to buying Proctor MkXVI MR1711. Mind you, this was another one of those where the owner said he was going to scrap it if it didn't sell, so at least I can get a warm glow about 'saving' a nice but not especially historic craf...

Re: sounds like a vintage 14

You say the planks are 'tongue and groove', but is there just the one layer or two? presumably not 3 as there wouldn't be room for the t&g. Two layers, separated by oiled calico (I suspect). Not sure I understand about room for the tongue and groove? Each plank has a v-shaped groove on its lead...

All is not entirely lost - I am looking at a 1964 Merlin Rocket on Friday so I may get to hang around the CVRDA forum after all...

Re: sounds like a vintage 14

First up, this boat will make someone a wonderful project - that person will not be me. It kills me to say it but I don't trust my abilities to do this superb craft justice. It would need some woodwork which I'm not capable of to do the best job, including creating new laminated and/or steamed inwal...

Re: sounds like a vintage 14

Hello all, first time poster. I'm going to have a look at this boat in the next few days so will report back. I happened to contact the owner first so I think that puts me top of the queue, but I need to be sure that I have the resources (physical and emotional) to take on this lovely boat. I'm sure...
