Scows, particularly scow Moths are one of my favorite dinghys. I just sold the Int Moth scow I owned this spring but am thinking of building a wingless scow for the U.S. Classic Scow Moth rule. My experiences were written up on the Australian Moth site; http://www.moth-sailing.org/reports/2003_usa_f...

Were'nt the Bembridge Redwings a keelboat? Don't the Hornets have some presence on the Continent which would eliminate them as a one club class. The Seafly seems to fit the bill. DavidH has mentioned the Harrier singlehanded dinghy which seems to have congregated at one club. There is the double pla...

I was bobbing up and down in the club whaler as PRO (hey, the one and only race officer, flag raiser, timer, etc.), running the Chesapeake 20 nationals (10 boats) and the thought occurred to me; how many other sailing classes are only raced out of one club. The Chesapeake 20 is only raced out of Wes...

Been lurking for months so I'll pop up now with a comment. Having been involved with a design that eventually went SMOD and also with development class design (70's Int 14's, development IC's to the old U.S National Rule and now a Classic Moth) the thought processes going into the design are entirel...

Duds are sometimes more interesting than the race winners. What was it about the hull shape of Shaft that made it so hard to control? (I don't have a copy of the Merlin Rocket book.) Also how many MR's did Jo Richards design?

I assume Booth was an amateur designer. Here's a question. Among the big three English development classes, Nat 12, Merlin Rocket, Int 14; which one had the most amateur designs in the 60's, 70's and 80's? My guess is it wasn't the Int 14. The list of amateur 14 designers is somewhat short. From mem...

David ...for us on the other side of the pond, not in the know about Merlin Rocket designs, you must give some more history on why Outrage and Courageous are two of your most sought after MR designs. It is always interesting to hear what strikes the fancy in another dinghy sailor. I must admit, plyw...

I spent a season in a K. Callaghan I14 way back when. One of the lowlights was unceremoniously captured and published in Y&Y of all mags. Keith Callaghan's website reprints the article; http://www.bluelightning.co.uk/Int14/int14.htm (thats my head). Keith always designed a fair amount of bustle ...

Mike Jackson's Nova - not much been mentioned of it in this forum and it didn't seem to garner much press back during the trials. What can our experts on these singlehanded trials remember about this hull? If my memory serves me, wasn't Mike Jackson also chief observer at the last ISAF singlehanded ...

Whoa! Not so fast lamenting the demise of homebuilding. In the U.S there has been a huge response to the kit built kayaks (stitch and tape, plywood). Chesapeake Light Craft, one of the original kit makers, has sold thousands of kits; most within the U.S but a fair number worldwide. With many repeat ...

I have an Australian scow Moth which has elicited more sarcastic comments than any other sailboat I have owned. On a weeknight club race several years ago, a two hander sailed by and dissed my scow, saying it looked like one of the barges that the tugs tow up and down the bay. My wife, who only pays...

Couple of notes covering some of the points in the posts above; Trapez - Thanks for the link to the thread on the Trapez. I remember the rig was complicated but didn't realize it had as many bits and wire as it did. One thing to remember about the 60's was the sailcloth was very soft and it was hard...

Back to the IYRU singlehanded trials of the 1960's; a microcosm of the various flavors of dinghy design of that era with many of the big name dinghy designers having a go. Almost forty some years on and it is great fun to speculate wildly about that design competition from some grainy black and whit...

Must admit, I check in to CVRDA only rarely, but I discovered this freeform discussion that veers from the 60's singlehanded trials to Merlin designs, to when does a Contender pick up it's skirts, to why the 470 became an Olympic dinghy and my fingers get very antsy over the keyboard. As far as smal...
