Re: Blandford Siren

Interesting. I don't know much about Percy Blandford but he seems to have been playing around the same design space (chine designs) as Jack Holt, though obviously with not near the same success in getting dinghy classes off the ground. The design reminds me of the 16' French pram-bowed design which ...

Re: "Ugliest dinghy ever" contest

LaserTourist, where do you find such artistic pieces, this must be the swoopiest dinghy ever. Haven't figured out what the long tracks are for though.

Re: For LaserTourist - Gouget Aluminum Moth

The boat in the Earwigoagin header photo is the Australian Vee Jay, a very popular junior Australian 12 footer in the 1960's (John Bertrand got his start in this class). A better canoe class to draw inspiration for an adult double planker is again Australian, the Payne Mortlock Canoe. YouTube here. ...

Re: How wings and sails work

Thanks for the link. Though the Claes Johnson video says the Kutta theory is incorrect I didn't get any alternative explanation from that video. Claes Johnson did admit that the foil designs of the 20th century use the mathematics of Kutta condition. Here is a quote I lifted from an online forum fro...

Re: How wings and sails work

This reminds me of reading an airplane forum several years ago where the same discussion raged - suction (Bernoulli) vs. pressure - with both sides going at it tooth and nail. Some of the problems I have with Holger's PowerPoint presentation is that his drawings feature no AOA (angle of attack) yet ...

Re: Presumably Portuguese

Ed Answer to your question about why I think this Portuguese dinghy might be hot molded. 1. To my eye, hot molded boats have a certain look, a certain patina. This looks like one of them. 2. Don't equate hot molding solely with Fairey Marine - it is much more extensive than that one company. (though...

Re: Presumably Portuguese

Interesting dinghy. Looks hot-moulded which probably means at least the shell was built somewhere else. Pure speculation but maybe the shells were shipped to Portugal where they were finished off to the specs of the Portuguese Navy - I presume these were some sort of training dinghy.

Re: Prodders

If I recollect from reading a tuning guide for the Moth written in the 1980's, sidestay deflection for a prodder was neutral, forestay deflection for a prodder was 1 inch. This, I think, was with no sail bent on the mast. As you admit, these deflections are highly dependent on the modulus of the sec...

Part 1 of Louis Pillon's French Moth History

Lois Pillon's interesting Part 1 can be found here. http://www.voilesetvoiliers.com/classique-et-tradition/les-debuts-de-la-plus-celebre-serie-a-restrictions-1929-1944-moth-les-faits-papillon-1/ Google Translate gives a rather broken English version though one can get the gist of the article. Maybe ...

Re: IC K89

Generally IC's of the late 1960's did not have the very high foredecks of the current practice or even of this interesting model. Also the foredecks generally ended in a straight bulkhead and didn't have the foredeck extended to the chainplates as in this model. Both of these characteristics indicat...

Re: I found a Fleetwind!

Interesting sideways discussion - which is typical for this forum. We, as old farts, know the gestalt of dinghy racing has changed but, as typical of old farts, and has been mentioned, turn to the history of our youth and young adult lives (which, as it may turn out, may be the golden age of dinghy ...

It's got to be a TOY singlehander by Tony Allen. You can see the Y on the sail. Also the aft position of the sliding seat is a good hint.

Origin of the West Kirby Marine Lake

I was watching a video of Fireflies team racing on West Kirby's marine lake and got to wondering when these small bodies of water, right on the beach, were built? Whose idea were they? The purpose of this marine lake is obvious, to have a sailing water not affected by the extreme range of tide on th...
