Re: Classic/ Lowrider Moth training at Oxford SC

Ian..........Thanks for your input, it seems we were thinking along similar lines re bringing the scow along etc........but I put her on the Facebook dinghy page, and to my amazement I had a lot of interest and she sold straight away! A shame in many ways, as I also thought it would be interesting t...

Re: Classic/ Lowrider Moth training at Oxford SC

Hi everyone......I've just come back from an attempted sail in the Scow...... I say attempted, as by the time I was all rigged up and ready to go, my ongoing neck injury was too painful to sail, and with no safety cover I decided that I couldn't risk it. The outcome of this is that I have decided th...

Re: Rare these days...Mark Dinghy on the bay

Yes.....that's my old one. The guy that bought it said he was going to set it in concrete and use it as an advertising thingy for his business..........needless to say I nearly started unloading it again.......Horrified! Glad to see that common sense took over. It's not a bad boat at all, and well w...

Re: Magnum or similar Moth

Hi Alan,

Only just seen this.......Thanks for the offer, but unfortunately its way above my budget..........I suppose I'm looking for another restoration project....or even a spare hull in need of work, as I have some spares to use up!......may end up building one from scratch yet!

Re: moths and noodles

It seems to be normal to re-mount over the aft end of the wing onto the hull having got her upright.......seen it done many times, but not tried that way myself......makes sense, as it keeps the weight as near central as possible when boarding again.

Magnum or similar Moth

I may regret this....but I think I may want one last go with a "tippy" Moth.....not urgent at all.....but if anyone has a skiff that they want to part with, then I could be interested..........I travel from Pompey on the south coast to southern Scotland at random times via M5/M6 so distanc...

Re: Classic/ Lowrider Moth training at Oxford SC

This is all looking good at present then........just insured the scow...... Noble offer a standard Moth policy 3rd party for around £42, and FC for around £102.....this appears to include foilers!...surprising I thought................I went for for the 3rd party option. All I need to do now is get ...

Re: moths and noodles

Interesting....and something that is much on my mind at present....(no wings on the scow, and more or less destined to turtle without mast-head flotation). If the mast is not allowed to go below the water level, then the noodles become positive buoyancy to help with righting momentum on the average ...

Yes David.....not sure if she's stable enough to be a press boat, but you're welcome to try! :)

Re: Classic/ Lowrider Moth training at Oxford SC

I'm interested in going along to this, assuming I get the scow sorted and checked out afloat in time....should be ok I think, but everything is buried in the garage at present while we do more alterations at the back of the house. I was hoping to get to Hunts .....but I would really need to have sai...

Re: Tools

Meanwhile ....in relation to tools.... I recommend buying all hand tools at car boot sales, and the older the better. The steel was much better back in the day, and a well sharpened/maintained older tool is much better than the modern stuff....and they can be had for a few pence....and some older po...

Re: Moth merry-go-round

Thank you Richard, only just seen this.......very interesting...........but I'm mystified: The scanned copy of the 1973 yearbook that I have here shows you as owning at that time number K3134 which appears to be the scow that I now have.......but if you didn't own it until later in the '70s, how is ...
