transom repair

I am repairing some rot along the top of my jollyboat transom. The transom is two pieces of 1/2" mahogany glues together. It had rotted along the top of the outer layer. To repair it I routed out the rotted wood and then expanded that across the whole transom (figured it would look better if it...

Re: interesting day across the pond

I wouldn't drive that far,.... I don't think. It would be like one of you going to Turkey to pick up a boat. If the owner can't sell it and is going to dispose of it I'll drive that far. Take a vacation in the mountains, bring a boat home. I would get a chance to see scenic Detroit on the way. Regre...

Re: interesting day across the pond

All the boat were found on recently purchased properties. The owners know nothing about them and simply want them gone. The guy with FD knows it is worth something, he's not sure what. I like it but it is 3500 kms away... left a standing offer to retrieve it if he can't sell it

Re: playing St Peter

Thanks all

varnish it is.

I don't want it looking new (spent a week learning how to make screws look old... bit misdirected but?) regretfully most of the battle scars on this boat were acquired when a barn collapsed on it.

Post more as I progress

Judgment day. any opinions on bright vs painted finish. The boat has been sealed, colour is as it will be. I have left dings and bangs on purpose, but some of the repairs stand out like a zit on the nose of a prom queen. Of course I see them because I made them. Biggest patch is 2X3 inch. I really a...

Re: let the decking begin

I rearranged the skeletal support of my ankle so been a bit slow, but lower decks are on http://i613.photobucket.com/albums/tt213/rlmungo/2012/IMG_0037.jpg . I can say I ain't too proud of my work. I sure struggled getting pieces to fit. Just butt ending two pieces of ply was a challenge. I can have...

Re: let the decking begin

Thanks Rob, I'll take a look

My wife explained I built a router fence to copy shapes and perhaps attaching a pencil to that would trace shapes on to a piece of wood clamped over the gunwales?? Marriage is a wonderful thing for those of us with simple minds.

Re: let the decking begin

Hi Rob Your link didn't get me anywhere... I get making a paper form, just not sure how to do it accurately when I have two curves that are not the same. The problem I have is getting the shape exact. I can get to within an mm or so, but also have uneven vertical edges (from the spoke shave)... It i...

let the decking begin

Well I have started... I bought ply and a piece of mahogany to begin redecking. I couldn't find 5mm ply so I bought 6 mm and will have to adapt. The ply quality is disappointing with very thin surface veneers (advertised as 1.3 mm, but they are closer to 0.5 mm) http://i613.photobucket.com/albums/tt...

making a boom

Can anyone provide me with a simple explanation of how I can convert a mast into a boom? I have the possibility of getting an albacore mast that I would like to convert into a boom for the jollyboat. Making it shorter is within my abilities, but what about the fittings at each end (transom sheeted b...

Re: annual barrage of naive questions

I will send in new pics as I progress. I have just switched the garage from winter to summer mode and can now access the boat. Decks should be done this summer and all should be reassembled this year. I find myself confounded by simple problems. I simply do not have the background or experience in m...

Re: annual barrage of naive questions

Thank you both the kicker is decidedly newer blocks, plastic pulley wheels, all others are tufnol. I don't have a boom so.... I have an old bent broken mast (barn collapsed on it) and everything below deck level is a mystery to me. Far more complicated than I would have thought. the jib sheet, maybe...

annual barrage of naive questions

Hi All I am sorting out bits associated with my jollyboat sail bag and associated bits and pieces. Appreciate some help with what they are. If you have no time for someone with no boat knowledge stop here..... First, is there a proper way to fold sails? The main sail and spinnaker are Ok but the jib...
