Re: 2018 events

Some six years ago, when preparing for the Holt centenary, I made the unwise prediction that I would 'do' Proctor 2018 then retire! Well, the celebrations for the IP centenary are indeed something of a full on activity and I'm already gearing up for the Dinghy Show! As with Holt, there will be an il...

Re: New sails...recommend a sailmaker?

Certainly if I was looking for sails for a single hander, Ian Morgan would be high on my list too.

In the end, you pay your money and take your choice, but I'd want someone who would actually be making the sails and you could go and talk to.

Re: New sails...recommend a sailmaker?

Another loft well used to making classic sails is Banks at Park Gate (just to the east of Southampton) - still family run and employing sailmakers who learnt their trade on cotton!

Re: Daring dinghy

I too found more detail on the Daring.

I found it very interesting that the boat was viewed as the trainer for the 505... in the same way that the OK was the lead in boat to the Finn.

An interesting perspective and yet another reason why this boat MUST be saved

Re: Classic pys for club racing

Nessa, have done a lot of work on this for Merlins, 505s, Solos and more. Taking the Solo as a good example - are you thinking of a sliding scale - ranging from the Winder FRP boats down through the ages to a Stone woodie from the 1960s. The differences, in percentage terms, are huge! Even between a...

Re: Baltic Wharf

Well done to Baltic Wharf and all the competitors for a great way to bring the curtain down on the 2017 season. Sadly, the absence of a couple of key boats robbed me off my expected story. It wasn't until this morning that I realised that I had one anyway! A decade ago, an event like BW would have b...

Re: Merlin Rocket Adur 3 design - Shoestring - update

Tim, did Mike Liggett give you sight of the Merlin Rocket book? If you are interested, I still have copies. as for 1065, I regret that she is no longer an Adur 3. The old hull was discarded and destroyed, all bar some deck beams and a thwart. These were used again so that 1065 is now a Holt Passing ...

Re: Proctor Centenary 2018

Check out my in-depth article on the Wayfarer in Y&Y (the mag) this summer! Double chine offers a lot of advantages over the single chine hull BUT poses a lot more 'building' for the home boatbuilder. What has to be remembered is that the Enterprise was originally meant to be 'more general purpo...

Re: Proctor Centenary 2018

Robert, My researches to date (and they are already fairly extensive) so only one collaboration and that was right back at the very beginning. The problem you face in what defines collaboration and what was just 'influence'. So we can say that Bucknell and Holt collaborated on the Mirror - and that ...

Re: Proctor Centenary 2018

Rupert, No - but will make plenty of reference out to them. I hadn't fully appreciated just how big a part Proctor played in the post war expansion in small keelboats - which then continued on through boats such as the Pirate and Eclipse. It is a part of the Proctor story, though thankfully not one ...

Re: Proctor Centenary 2018

Ok, have found the article and will reduce it and try to post it up on here.

BUT - back to Proctor - we've yet more designs....

Leprecaun
Rolinx
Swinger 20

Now if anyone can thrown ANY light on these I'd be very grateful - one of these came as a surprise to me too.

Re: Finn nationals

Alan - well said! I thought that the event that was run at Roadford a few years back - when the Finns and Moths had such a good time, was a great event that I was proud to feature in an article. Since then the Classic Moths have gone on from strength to strength and I could write about them pretty m...

Re: Laser 1 possibly very early #39

I would go further and say that it is hard to have any dialogue about the timeline of dinghy development that DOESN'T include the Laser. It isn't just part of the narrative, but from the 1970s onwards pretty much defined major segments of the narrative. I understand the reluctance to even have the b...

Re: Scows various...

Matt, I'm sorry but NO! There were definitions in place long before the Wiki version, with many of these having a great deal more in the way of background and credibility. When the Skiff 'revolution' took place there was a great deal of discussion about what was a 'skiff' - I remember that the Germa...
