It's an early Magnum 2 from 1975/6, not a M4 (there were only about 4 of those and they were all in Aus & NZ).

It was on the bay about a year ago so this owner didn't get much use out of it.

Funnily enough, I was thinking of doing a guide to Magnums only today - between my photos and the ones on the old archive I can put up info on most of them. I'll probably resurrect the thread on the ID section to post them.

That's a Magnum 8 - the giveaway is the mast stub/boom attached at deck level, which it was the first Magnum to have, also no visible chines at the transom.

Definitely Magnum 3 with the overlap on the chines, you just can't see the flares in the pics. The Phobia had a wider top to the transom and the sail numbers started at K3760 (mine was K3765.....) Very early (or even the first?) Magnum 3 from late '76/early'77, with the footwell cockpit and ribs bracing the flares as on the M2 (but you can see the overlap of the chines at the transom). If that's the sail that matches the boat, it was sailed by Richard Hargreaves to 2nd o/a in the 1977 worlds ...

Can I add a small question which lots of people can probably answer? I'm removing some redundant spinnaker fittings fron an alloy mast and some of the s/s panhead screws are seized with corrosion - will penetrating oil do any good, or pouring boiling water on it, or what? This is very interesting - it's in amazingly good condition but I think it's earlier than 1970 (sail no. 2638). I've never seen this double-chine design before either.

So will someone snap up this piece of history?

It looks like a 'Wombat' design, which was one of the first professionally-built Aussie skiffs from about 1983-4.
