Re: is there no end to it?

It's an early Magnum 2 from 1975/6, not a M4 (there were only about 4 of those and they were all in Aus & NZ).

It was on the bay about a year ago so this owner didn't get much use out of it.

Here is a quick Spotters' Guide to some of the Magnums (it doesn't include the 4, Phobia, 9.5, 9.9 or 10) to start with.

Re: Int Moth on Apollo Duck

Funnily enough, I was thinking of doing a guide to Magnums only today - between my photos and the ones on the old archive I can put up info on most of them. I'll probably resurrect the thread on the ID section to post them.

Re: Int Moth on Apollo Duck

That's a Magnum 8 - the giveaway is the mast stub/boom attached at deck level, which it was the first Magnum to have, also no visible chines at the transom.

Re: yet another moff on the bay!

Definitely Magnum 3 with the overlap on the chines, you just can't see the flares in the pics. The Phobia had a wider top to the transom and the sail numbers started at K3760 (mine was K3765.....) Here's a slightly late M3 with a self-draining cockpit http://i1137.photobucket.com/albums/n504/paulmac...

Re: yet another moff on the bay!

Very early (or even the first?) Magnum 3 from late '76/early'77, with the footwell cockpit and ribs bracing the flares as on the M2 (but you can see the overlap of the chines at the transom). If that's the sail that matches the boat, it was sailed by Richard Hargreaves to 2nd o/a in the 1977 worlds ...

Re: annual barrage of naive questions

Can I add a small question which lots of people can probably answer? I'm removing some redundant spinnaker fittings fron an alloy mast and some of the s/s panhead screws are seized with corrosion - will penetrating oil do any good, or pouring boiling water on it, or what? The screws are good but I j...

Re: 'nother old moff

This is very interesting - it's in amazingly good condition but I think it's earlier than 1970 (sail no. 2638). I've never seen this double-chine design before either.

So will someone snap up this piece of history?

Re: low rider - what model?

It looks like a 'Wombat' design, which was one of the first professionally-built Aussie skiffs from about 1983-4. Quite similar to a Magnum 5 but heavier and a wee bit slower, but will have lasted better due to being foam-sandwich rather than ply/epoxy. Landenberger's boats were home-designed and bu...

Definitely not a Poole AB - I had one and they look exactly like a miniature Cadet.

This one does look a bit like the back half sawn off a Mirror........

Re: Early Int. Moth info.

Is everyone still sleeping off their Christmas lunch? 8) On Skols; they were a bit before my time but I guess that 'SL' was Superlight and then the Skol 2 was the same shape but made stronger and more finished to appeal to a wider market. Then the Skol 3 was wider with more displacement at a time wh...

Re: Xmas Idea - 100 Ultimate Sailing Adventures

There was something similar in the Sydney 18s in the bad old days of the 1960s......a spectator boat was smack in the way when one tacked and caused it to capsize, so the skipper swarmed up the mast onto the launch and chinned the driver. And why not? When the 'show' and the media become more import...

Re: Should we make a CVRDA scow?

It's got the tunnel at the wrong end.......... The Aussie scows had tunnel-bows so when they were heeled it was like having one bow, and when they were level there was resistance to nosediving. Their advantages were in having more leverage and so carrying more power when heeled, and stability genera...
