Re: Old 505's

I spoke with Pete White today. He did buy the boat from the Lake District but then sold it on to France where there is a strong fleet of old 505's. He said it was built of two layers of 3 ply and had a Chippendale builders plate. Jack however said he never built any that way so we don't really know :D

Re: Old 505's

Peter White moved back to his home on the East Coast and is sailing Squibs these days. I will ask him next week when I see him.

Re: Uffa Fox International 14 designs

Great care needs to be taken with any published plans that might in the yachting press. It was common for designers to slightly modify the plans that became public to protect their designs. Thunder had more hollow in her waterlines than Thunder & Lightning but the plans for both show straight wa...

Re: A new forum

A little more than "30 years of bar banter". The tradition of banter between East Coast and South Coast goes back at least 130 years and so this is really a continuing historical tradition which should of course be preserved. I suspect that it had existed for many decades before that with ...

Re: Finn sailing

I have only sails a Finn a few times but it is one of the best boats of its type in its class. One small point not to detract from the quality of build, but Ben might have used the boat for 2 Olympics, but it spent 3 3/4 years in store between the two not on the circuit working. :)

Re: Good finish using gell coat?

It is possible to re-gel large areas successfully and it is done on a regular basis, but it is a technique definitely left for the skilled professionals with the right equipment. The fill, fair and paint is the best option.

Re: International Canoes built by Nunn Brothers at Waldringfield

If Alex has time or it is at all possible, it would be good to go and talk to the old boy again with a tape recorder and get his memories set down. These are the sort of memories we should try not to lose.

Re: new deck for an Albacore - a string of questions...

Hi Ed, Reliaply went out of business a long time ago as far I recall and Brunzeel were a dutch company. Their ply never actually complied with BS1088 but many thought is was much better. They were in independent company over here but I think then closed down and supplied through Silvermans. Whether ...

Re: new deck for an Albacore - a string of questions...

The astro turf doormat is a better option than carpet. It will dry out and also not trap grit so much. Leaving a boat sitting on wet carpet may cause problems with the finish. It can certainly cause osmosis in grp hulls.

Re: Anyone involved in this?

Yes, it was an interesting session with the RYA. A case of left hand and right hand I fear, but after a fair amount of work, a lot of red pen from myself and Jamie Campbell and a very large poke with a sharp stick I hope that we have managed to drag it back on track. It is now the 14 rather than the...
