Re: THAT DB5....

My first proper non parental crew was Richard Mossip who had the production version of this from new (Quite a stir at Merlin Rocket opens with two Astons in the car park the other belonging to Robin Judah.) he moved to America and took it with him where he ran it as his car untill he sadly died too ...

Re: 12 sq Metre Sharpies

An excelleny example of a traditional class moving with the times, more seen in keelboats classes than dinghies sadly.

Re: Identification - USA boat

The Olympic monotype - at least in my picture of Peter Scott winning his 1936 Bronze Olympic medal is round bilged, going back to when God was young I recall a couple of University Team Races in Chesapeak and Buzzards Bays in the US of A in similar Cat (Una.) Rigged Boats the wide flatish bottoms ri...

Re: Merlin Rocket bits - 950

Well 1. You can still buy the bags from various manufacturers and sources second hand ones can be found The Boat Barge at Burseldon Bridge is a gold mine of out of date stuff that one had long forgotten worth a call. 2. Your little plasic wheel the nautical term is sheave and you can source this fro...

12 sq Metre Sharpies

Brilliant class CVRDA-able every one, I think, but updated as they go and raced hard. http://www.yachtsandyachting.com/news/?article=152444 Jon would be good if you could recruit a few for Oulton Week. I remember we used to get a couple in the early 60's. They are heavy and have on rails directional...

Re: Moving Quickly Along - Merlin 950

Don'r panic Captain Mainwaring! A racing dinghy sailed primarily on fresh water and covered when not in use is hardly "marine use"!

Re: Insurance - Merlin Rocket - Oh dear!

Insurers like evryone else have a business to run and if costs of repairs, replacements and value increase as inflation rises (It is on an accelerating curve across the world.) and claims frequency rises then premiums will rise too. Doubtless clubs will be sensative to their members situations and h...

There are several past and present Merlin Rocket Sailors who insure racing dinghies and sadly for the premiums do understand the risk!

Re: Insurance - Merlin Rocket - Oh dear!

Sadly it's the claim for everything culture, especially prevalent in the Merlin Class often posted and boasted on their web site, which has put premiums up, underwriters do read web sites too, frankly third party only is a practical way to go, for low value boats, unless like Garry you are a careful...

Re: Cotton sails

Chris is of course correct but if unpicked in advance with a "quickunpick" and then frankly give a sailmakers palm and needles it's not beyond anyone to do a passable job of remaking it replacing the luff wire with some 1X19 rather than the galvanised - plastic covered it will almost certa...

Re: Cotton sails

Of course it is, Jeckylls at Worxham would almost certainly do it though what they would charge is anybody's guess, the man to speak to at Jeckylls is Graham Leech former Flying Dutchman, Enterprise and Merlin Rocket sailor. Failing that Ratseys at Cowes might be persuaded but not until the autumn! ...

Re: Moving Quickly Along - Merlin 950

Was that because you found the wind steady after Shearwater, or because you didn't notice the shifts?
