Re: Is this interesting? The new dinghies of 1946..
But look at what happened to the National 15' class, the Swordfish! National status didn't help it at all when Fairey's decided to alter it and produce the Albacore, stopping production of the Swordfish. If the Firefly had been less of a success out of the blocks, maybe without the Olympic boost, w...

The worst affected area - a strip of something like bath sealant came out of the hole between planking and hog and there is a soft patch about the size of a 50p coin (which is bound to get bigger...) http://i535.photobucket.com/albums/ee352/acraigbennett/DSCF0954.jpg From below - the Y piece at the ...

You are quite right - I've just looked at the book and the sail number is 6.
I had misread the caption, which says that the boat is "one of" the YW 14 ft restrictred class and that prototype, Merlin, was designed by Mr Jack Holt. So it is indeed her.

Is this interesting? The new dinghies of 1946..
(This probably uses a lot of bandwidth, so if its old hat and not interesting I'll take it down.) I picked up a copy of "The Yachting Year" Volume One, 1946, a not very rare "yachtsman's annual" edited by a certain Eric Hiscock, who went on to become quite well known in cruising ...

This is F3000. She is off the water and F3163 is on it. All nice and dry. "last job" after replacing decks and bouyancy tanks... will get a photo. Somebody - quite possibly the same body who screwed into the delaminating side decks using rawlplugs and who renewed the bilge stringers with s...

These things are plastic milk bottle shaped - square - but bigger and made of thick polyethyene, with a good handle. Work a treat!

Firefly centrecase leaks...
I assume the approved technique is to clean up the area, get it well dried, warm it with a hot air gun and run warm epoxy into any crevices? Should the epoxy be slightly thickened? Is it prudent to mask off the inside of the c/b case?

Re: Transom drain flaps
Thought I'd add my few ore or put my oar in! In the early to mis 60's the Merlin Rocket class adopted transom flaps after some very dramatic trials. They worked and we soon discovered the trick was not be too gready and to start sailing away on a close reach with not a lot of power applied and to s...

Re: Transom drain flaps
Which leads me to the Albacore After Deck Question: The very definite opinion of serious Albacore sailors is that one should not have an after deck, on grounds of weight in the ends. On the other hand, I quite like the look of boats with after decks, and one could get a good big buoyancy tank in the...

Re: Is it possible to alter the shape of a Fairey hull?
Thanks.
Idea now canned.
I'd have to build a proper mould and do it properly...still, 8ft 6ins of could moulding is not an impossibly huge task...
