Re: Int Moth K3222 Project

Good news, new parts are glued in. I made a new central spine to support the deck and linked together with a new daggerboard case, also a pair of diagonal bulkheads to triangulate shroud points and mast step area. These should prevent the hull and deck flexing under rig loads without adding much wei...

Re: Europa Moth K2588, Moth development?? (info wanted pleas

Sami, Have to say I'm impressed with the speed and accuracy of your paint stripping, a very tidy job in 2 days! I'm also intrigued by the mystery chines on the Europa, an odd thing to build in to a perfecly round bilge hull. Apart from Nessa's Yellow Peril, which because of its width could not have ...

Re: magnum 8 moth query

You are doing well to get round the course at all in shifty conditions, so stick at it, with practice you will soon be working through the fleet. Tacking without stalling is crucial for the pondsailor. Its easy enough to do in a Laser for example, but they have a nice soft sail that flops into place...

Re: magnum 8 moth query

I'm sailing on a very small and very shift pond Welcome to Masochist corner, it doesn't get much more difficult than that, I should know! ...but I think its true to say you need to worry even less about fine tuning of rig measurements and more about keeping the wings out of the water.... easier sai...

Re: magnum 8 moth query

It is really, there are so many different hull/rig/sail combinations that measurements are pointless. Mast rake, as Jim suggested is get the tip of the mast somewhere over the daggerboard (with downhaul and kicker on) and rig tension, as Ian wrote, just enough to prevent the leeward shroud waving ar...

Re: magnum 8 moth query

My advice is throw the books away, you will need all your concentration to sail the boat. There are no set measurements or sailmakers guides, its all done by the seat of the pants, usually soggy ones! Most of the pointers you need were in this discussion from a few months ago: http://www.cvrda.org/c...

Re: Baltic Wharf 16 Nov

Thank you to all at Baltic Wharf for trying their best in less than zero wind. It was a pleasant day out and a chance to drift about in a unique environment, even the cars at the traffic lights were moving quicker than us. Rounding the leeward(?) mark in front of the SS Great Britain made it worth t...

Re: Baltic Wharf 16 Nov

I'm Looking forward to joining you Alan.
Pity the Mag 5 isn't ready, but it sounds like its progressing well in the time you've had. A bit of weight from sheathing is better than a weakness in the long run.
Have a go in my Mag7 if there is time between races.

Re: Repairs to Merlin Rocket 3365

I'm currently trying to work out how the dismantle the wire for these through the deck sheaves - I'm starting to think the rigging was finished on the boat. If you unscrew the sheave assembly from the deck and lift out, you should find there is a centre spindle for the wheel that can be pushed out ...

Re: Lee shore.

Aah, that was the day Julie and I were trying out a lovely wooden Scorpion, (It was too blustery for mothing) I remember some conversation about an inter-club series. Sorry, I was too busy bailing the Scorpion out to say hello, but I'm sure you were made welcome by our Commodore Andi and we will hop...

Re: Baltic Wharf 16 Nov

I'm thinking of going with the Moth. (Mag7) Weather permitting. Never been to Baltic Wharf but it looks a fascinating place to try and sail a moth, so why not? Can anyone advise on parking and launching facilities? I would have to drive down for the day so early start from the midlands to make a 10....

Re: Int Moth K3222 Project

Thanks sami, it's nice to know you are following the saga! I accidentally uploaded the case sides pic twice, here is the one i intended to show: It might have been possible to re-line the case with new formica but an awkward job to keep it flat enough while glueing. I'm always suspicious of messy jo...
