Re: Bumblebee Dinghy

Upside down is definitely best.

Also put it on some trestles at least 18" above the ground. Any lower and splash back from heavy rain will start the rot

Re: FD on the bay

Oh boy! serious woodwork, looks lovely though, shame my place has a 16ft limit........or maybe not! Are those halyard winches I see on the mast foot? definitely ratchet and pawl. I'd never buy a competetive one one as I'd feel guilty for not competing in it, however an oldie like this one would give...

Re: Mirror Spinnaker

Roger.

It's probably best to give the pole a miss because of the postage costs, I'll see what I can make up.

Rupert, I'd like the sail and bits, how do you want me to get the money to you?

Re: Mirror Spinnaker

Dear Rupert and Roger,

yes, I'd like your bits, it's for fun not serious racing. How much do you want for the bits? Could you post them to South Devon?

Thanks

Re: Bumblebee Dinghy

I remember these from ages ago, looks like a nice little concept, in the same vein as the new junk rigs are being split to give more windward speed. A slightly less sphisticated form of the swing rig for model yachts There is one on Gumtree at the moment: http://www.gumtree.com/p/boats-kayaks-jet-sk...

Re: another minisail

Well, its got a windsurfer sail and a split windsurfer mast. Actually it might work quite well with that setup. Nice Rudder

Re: Vintage Finn?

Was the Elvestrom Finn the one in Newton Abott recently (see boats for sale Aug 19th "Gold Cup Finn hull for free" by roiz89)?

If so, JB9 made an offer for it so maybe it's not in South Hampton now.........

Re: How wings and sails work

Here is an interesting commentary on false theories of lift by Claes Johnson,"Incorrect or trivial theories of flight." Kutta and Zhukovsky are being taken to task. I never new the K-Z theory was so old, possibly flawed and still used..... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LNLXdlXKvL8 The ta...

Re: Introduction and vintage International 14 query.

My sailing area is 10 mins walk from home, it gives your sailing an entirely different flavour, we have very local conditions, it can be horrid a few miles away on Dartmoor and beautiful sun here on the river. It's worth spending the few mins to get to the water and is ideal for boat fettling! The n...

Re: Pre War Int. 14 video

Really interesting...

I loved the footage of the Thames rater capsizing and the early 14s with Lugsails on the river.

Re: How wings and sails work

Thanks for the link to the WB sails page, packed full and needs much further study. The Babinsky paper is nice because it narrows the source of lift down to curves in the streamlines, no Bernouli or venturi, no Kutta-Zhukobsky circulation theory of lift, no unequal path or equal transit explanations...

How wings and sails work

I realised a few weeks ago that I had no real idea of why boats actually go to windward, so I did some research. Found a nice treatment by Holger Babinsky, Professor of Aerodynamics at Cambridge, however it's 10 years old so may be out of date. Look at this video, http://www.cam.ac.uk/research/news/...
