Re: Getting a decent paint finish?

I think a 'fast' finish is out of the question, not that this is too important as the boat is likely to be spending most of it's time at the back of the fleet with me on the helm. The hull has flat spots & dips a plenty despite many hours spent filling and sanding, fairing a hull would appear to...

Getting a decent paint finish?

The restoration of Phantom 499 is inching forward and the hull is now ready for the topcoat having already had 2 coats of primer, 2 coats of undercoat and then flatted with 600 wet & dry. I would like to try to get a reasonable finish to the topcoat but would appreciate any advice from those in ...

Re: Fitting Inspection Hatches

jpa - Thanks for the tips.

Nessa - My Phants 499, not sure of the age but I'm guessing mid - late 70's, when finished it will be sailed on the Thames @ Reading.

Fitting Inspection Hatches

On the old Phantom I'm restoring there is some movement in the side decks in the area where you would normaly sit. Rather than re-deck, I have decided to add a couple of inspection hatches and to effect a repair from inside. Has anyone any tips on marking out and cutting nice neat holes for the new ...

Re: sails

The Phantom I am restoring (P499) came with an 'A Team' sail. By the look of it I would guess it is as old as the boat which would probably date it back to the late 70's or early 80's, unfortunately now only usefull as a dust sheet :( .

Re: A request for advice - a Finn - ish singlehander?

Phantom, Supernova or if you have a good fleet of Solo's at the club then also consider a Solo with a stiff mast. A lot will depend on crew weight, budget and whether you want fleet racing or mixed handicap. GRP (Yuck!) or Epoxy (Double Yuck!) Phantoms will be from +£2K and +£4k respectively, wooden...

Re: Oops, broke the Moth again...

Rupert, if the Moth repair proves unsucessful then you would be welcome to borrow my old Solo for the weekend. Unfortunately I do not currently have a car with a towbar so I cant get it back to Newbury, so you would have to collect from Henley SC at Wargrave Nr Reading.

Re: Pegasus ?????

By the way, does anyone else find that when linking to ebay, you loose all contact with the cvrda site, and if you click on back, end up wherever you were before going to the cvrda site at all? I don't have this problem on my work laptop or home desktop but then I use 'Firefox' as a web browser on ...

Re: Paint advice - G4

Like most old Phantoms this boat was a home built stitch & glue job. The external joints were taped as part of the build process, I have only replaced those joints which were totaly shot. I would have extreme reservations regarding the structural integrity of the hull if all the external tapes w...

Re: Paint advice - G4

I have stiil not made a final decision regarding using G4. My local aquatic center only stocked 'Blagdons V8' which I believe is similar to G4, however having read the instructions on the back of the can it would only appear to be suitable for porous surfaces. I have retaped some of the external joi...

Re: Paint advice - G4

Thanks for all the input. P499 has not seen the water for some years and I am half expecting her to leak like a seive when she eventualy sees the wet stuff. Part of the attraction of G4 was that it might provide a nice water tight seal to the hull, however I don't relish the thought of applying coat...

Paint advice - G4

The time is fast approaching when I have to paint the hull of the Phantom I'm restoring. Though I have taken it back to bare wood I had not planned to spend lots on expensive marine paints or epoxy's. My original idea was:- 2 coats Screwfix Universal White primer 2 coats Dulux Undercoat 2 coats Inte...
