Re: to paint or not to paint? GRP is the question
Best results are obtained with spray gun, normally 2 pack polyurethane, i have shot a fair bit of the stuff over various boats, Int 709 i found prone to orange peel, blakes was as soft as oil based & best avoided, best of all by far is Epifanes 2 pack that is simply superb. Just done a deck cabi...

Re: turning over
Last boat i turned over was a 28ft Saunders launch, one sling attached to a deck beam frd & aft with the bight of the sling under the boat, one chain block lifts one side & rolls the boat into the sling. Half hour single handed with the boat never more than six inches of the floor, few tyres...

Re: identi-fictiion and his-story
It could be an unregistered DB the stern looks very similar but there was no bow shot to see, funny that the number happens to be an unregistered one though! Some of the early DB's differed quite drastically from the plans, my Dad built one just after the design came out & ran out of planking ti...

Re: National 18
My Dad had an old Uffa Ace 18 called Phantom in the late 50's built by Andersons of Whitstable, He sold her in 1962 & built a glued clinker one Also to the Uffa Ace design, Marlenemar as she was called was a beautiful & wickedly fast boat. My first memory of sailing is of that boat. Aged 3 s...

Re: Boatbuilders
When i was there we had a technician called Sam, big thickset guy who used to sharpen the planer knives himself, he used to finish them off stropping them on the palm of his hand, he also had several fingers missing, actually the result of a bandsaw accident with a hangover when an apprentice. Dick ...

Re: holes in hulls
A useful technique for holding the surface veneers of a cold moulded boat down is to use a banding or strapping machine used for strapping carboard boxes. I just did a repair on an elderly cold moulded coastal four rowing boat that had an old patch delaminating. A piece of ply was fixed across the g...

Re: Family 14 'Lady Jayne'
You can scarph planks but remember to stagger the joints well, the scarphs should trail aft on the outside if that makes sense. The most invaluble tool you can buy is a black & decker powerfile this will remove the riveted over portion over the roves with ease & allow the nails to be knocked...
