Re: de-bodging an Osprey centreboard case - advice req'd

Epoxying the inside of the case could be a good idea. It's so hard that it'll probably never wear though.

Re: de-bodging an Osprey centreboard case - advice req'd

I don't know about your club but in every other club I've been a member of or visited there's always been plenty of people willing to give a hand pulling a boat up the slip.

Re: Hull paint

You're probably talking about tiny differences in performance between gloss and matt finishes. I think it's more important to get a really smooth finish on the foils.

Re: de-bodging an Osprey centreboard case - advice req'd

I don't think your scooter thing will work. I seriously doubt that you'll get sufficient traction without an adult sitting on it. Plus the thing is going to have survive immersion when launching and recovering the boat.

Re: Blue sky thinking or Dark and Stormy days ahead?

It's not just inland clubs where foilers would have issues. Anywhere where you have to launch though the surf or have to sail out through a shallow, narrow channel would be extremely challenging I suspect. Not that I imagine such factors will weigh on the RYA. All they seem to care about is generati...

Re: de-bodging an Osprey centreboard case - advice req'd

I don't think the position is critical but they're generally on the mast just under the gooseneck. I think a 100mm box might be a bit short. There is/was a pair of Holt Allen H233 boxes on Fleabay at the moment which initially caught my interest... http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/252982958382?_trksid=p20...

Re: de-bodging an Osprey centreboard case - advice req'd

I'm not sure what the current fashion is on Ospreys for tensioning the jib halyard but the photos I've seen suggest they're still using a muscle box on the mast like we did in the 80s. Is the positioning of these theoretical muscle boxes critical? What I mean is I'm loathe to drill holes in a mast ...

Re: Blue sky thinking or Dark and Stormy days ahead?

A few years ago, I did a race in Tremadoc bay. It was a lovely day with a nice force 3 breeze. But initially I couldn't understand why the centreboard was occasionally being bumped up as I knew were in at least 5 metres of water. Then I noticed the sea was full of large jelly fish. My centreboard wa...

Re: de-bodging an Osprey centreboard case - advice req'd

April 2017 issue of RYA Wavelength recommends a spindle diameter of 8 times the diameter of the rope. Otherwise the breaking strength of the rope is considerably reduced. So get rid of the wire rope but you might have to make the winch spindles bigger. The best thing to do with the winches is bin t...

Re: de-bodging an Osprey centreboard case - advice req'd

I've never had to take a centreboard case out but I think I'd try using a chisel. I'd start at the aft end of the case where there's load of access room. I bet once you've go a decent length detached it'll basically "unzip".

Re: de-bodging an Osprey centreboard case - advice req'd

My advice is take the case out, clean it all up and glue it with epoxy. That'll hold for ever without the need for screws. Rot in the hog or keel may be an issue but there are plenty here with experience of sorting stuff like that. I think the urgent thing is to get the case out and get everything d...

Re: de-bodging an Osprey centreboard case - advice req'd

I think you should be able to patch it up quite well using decent Mahogany to form something like he's fabricated. Glue the whole thing in with epoxy mixed with gap filler. Whatever you do, over-engineer it. I know from 20+ years of racing Ospreys that you need to err on the side of over-engineering...

Re: Enterprise lack of pointing

My suggestions: 1) Join the class association if you're not already a member. 2) Do some of the the local open meetings. Enterprises have a good open meeting circuit in the Midlands. Join in. You'll learn a hell of a lot more class racing against people who know how to make the boat go (and will be ...
