Re: Repairs to Merlin Rocket 3365
If it was my boat unless the lowers worked perfectly i'd get rid them and use chocks instead. You won't source a new lever strut unless you find a chandler whose had one for decades on the shelf. Chocks are a neat, simple solution and never, ever come uncleated. Wood. Drop me a PM if I can help, we ...

Re: Varnish
Blatent business plug but....... We have started to use products from Skippers. The one pot Topkapi is as good as Epifanes. The two pack poliglass is an incredible product, 6 coats on in a day. Very reminiscent of the "old" Blakes cyano based one pack varnish. It's not all that hard though...

Re: Merlin No.8 on the 'bay
Another point really is that the classic/vintage thing seems to have missed the Phantom Kipper, September Girl, Hexagon etc etc etc from the late 60's early 70's Again I think this is because people will choose a boat that they feel has a realistic chance of achieving something, and boats of that er...

Re: Merlin No.8 on the 'bay
The trouble with "old boats" handicaps in Merlin is that in certain conditions even the oldest boats are still more than just on the pace. In handicap racing i'd suggest that if you did get Kate sailing against a Fireball on the Thames there would be only one outcome even off current yards...

Re: Merlin No.8 on the 'bay
The majority - if not all - of the modernised classic Merlins are done to win on the Thames, where they are still extremely fast even relative to new boats. The side effect of this is that the classic scene is skewed towards winning rather than preserving history, and some of these boats, still outc...

Re: Blithfield event
I would imagine that the carpark will be ok, but even if it isn't the field is easily accessible. Pete M will sort you out.

Re: Blithfield event
Do we have a rough idea of haw many CVRDA boats will we coming?
Food etc is planned for Saturday & Sunday so knowing numbers would be useful. up to 10 EPSs are expected so if there are a similar number of vintage ships I think we'll split the starts.

Re: Blithfield event
No problem with any of that.
There may be quite a few Laser EPSs at the event and I may give them a separate start if it looks like it might be busy.
Unless there is an odd wind direction there are no plans for back to back races as this is not usually necessary.
Look forward to seeing everyone

Re: Blithfield event
Also as PRO for the weekend i'd like some pointers on what sort of courses you like and things like race length. I take it that you use mass starts (10/5/off for period authenticity?) and work out the results afterwards on elapsed time? The second race on sunday will be alongside club racing so it w...

Re: Blithfield event
There is a private function on in the clubhouse Friday night. While access to camp and things like toilets shouldn't be an issue the bar and lounge will not be available unfortunately. As said before there are plenty of pubs in Abotts Bromley which is about 15 mins walk away. The other point to note...

Re: Merlin Rocket wanted
The problem with most old boats is finding somewhere to put the cleat. The ideal place is the thwart really, but this tends to be a bit busy already. I think with a high tank boat the best compromise is to have a single deck bush in front of the mast through which both vangs pass attaching to a doub...
