Way off the AGM topic

Post by chris »

This would have been removed as off topic (quite properly too) but my mind wandered. It would seem that this enterprising talk of the classes has opened a hornets’ nest full of wasps and scorpions. Or maybe Merlin the magician conjured up dark spells of national and world wide significance when still a young trainee – probably a general purpose fourteen year old. What a miracle though to behold as cherubs, and herons flew round above laughing at us all as if we were mere jacksnipes. The old fairy tale question to the glasses on the wall just reflected this strange image of a lone, naked tramp running lazily along pacing himself whilst puffing out the tune from Elgar’s enigma variations and then Mahler’s Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen But this was no mere prelude to Prospero’s play – such a windy scale…or the offspring from Tchaikovsky’s ballet but then the picture faded. Reminding me I ought to be working!
OK so can U list the sparkling boats that belong to these two designers? ( and at least one that doesn't belong to either.)

Shakewell has a succesor, Very Good Chris, of course some peoples minds are on London SW19.
The umpire on whom the sun never sets!
I am indebted to messr Flanders & Swan for this!
We are now well into Wimbledon one sometimes wonders what really goes through the umpires mind as he sits in his chair!

The scene is Wimbledon, July, Ladies' singles. Third round.

Ballboys are bounding all over the ground.
Play started at two, and we're still on the rack; a-quarter-to-five, and they've hardly begun.
A perfect defense,
[pop!]
meets a perfect attack. [pupe!]
Miss L. Hammerfest... meets Miss J. Hunter-Dunn.
Game to Miss Hunter-Dunn.
Miss Hammerfest leads by two games to one in the third set, having won the
first by eighteen games to sixteen, lost second twenty-five to
twenty-seven.

I never LIKED tennis! Damn silly name for a game with its volleys and
loves and all that. The first time I umpired was June of '36 -- I didn't
think much of it THEN. Just rather fancied myself in the HAT. Since when I
have umpired again,
[pop!]
and again,
[pop!]
and again,
[pop!]
and year after year as I've sat on court after court I've been struck by
the thought they are BASHING a BALL with the GUTS of a CAT.

What a sport... You may think it's tedious seen from down there -- it's
LUDICROUS seen from ABOVE! Fifteen/Love!
[pop!]
Keeping my eye firmly fixed on the ball, hoping the linesman will know
what to call... Fifteen/All!
[pop!]
As each long, drawn-out point, throws my neck out of joint! What a job,
set-after-set. Oh, the relief when you get the occasional lob...
[pop!]
A-h-h-hh... 'Till they SMASH it.
[pupe-ps-s-s-s-s-ss-ooh]
Oh, dash it!

Thirty/Fifteen! What does it all mean?
[pop!]
Forty/Fifteen! Why thirty/fifteen; why forty/fifteen? What if, instead, I
just said ONE/nothing, TWO/nothing, THREE/nothing, and GAME? Do just the
same; some of the debenture-holders be bound to get shirty.
[pop!]
Forty/Thirty!
[pop!]
And now the spectators are trickling out; there's thunder about -- with
luck, it will RAIN. That aught to reduce...
[pop!]
Deuce! Half of me bored.
[pop-ptptptptpttt]
Net cord! The other half nervous... First service! Wish it were dinner...
Thank God, a winner! Advantage, Miss Hammerfest!

[pop!]
Bonk.
[pop!]
Bink.
[pop!]
Bonk.
[pop!]
Bink.

Drives you to DRINK. Sitting up here, I'm obsessed with the fear of
getting it WRONG, with everybody else will be going "bonk, bink ;" I shall
be going "bink, bonk!" Oh, DO get it over-with; what is the use! Oh, we're
back again...

Deuce!
Wimbledon. June. Ladies' Singles. Third Round.
Groundsmen are asked, "How's the state of the ground?"
Players are photographed jumping the nets.
But there sits a figure one always forgets.
The Umpire... upon whom... the sun... never sets!
Simples.

Couldn't thin of anywhere so if it ruins the run of intelligent wit very sorry, but the way they divide themselves is quite sensible.
I especially like Spirit of Tradition.

When designing dinghies should we go Farr(th)er than the extra Mil(n)e. But for the Merlin, Rig(ht)den - Wyche way should we turn. Watts the best design? Which are Welbourne? Some are head Turners, some are Smart asses and some are tasty enough to be Savery. Good Evans, and Oh, Brian Kennedy - for your information - some are even Hoares. But among all the Merlin designers there is but one Truman! Enough I hear you cry and OK - it's a fair Cop(pock)!!

Hi AG,

I have idly wondered if we should in some way encourage those who in their spare time build boats using traditional techniques. We are trying to keep the boats alive but they are doing more in some ways by keeping the skills alive.
