Why do you post?

Post by Ed »

Way....way off topic this:

I post to quite a few Forums and Mailing Lists.

All related in some way to my interests, skills or knowledge.

Recently, in another community, where I occasionally post re: 'digital imaging' and 'museumy' things, the moderator said that a small group of us 'only posted for our own self-grandiosement' or 'commercial advantage'....and cos we like to hear the sound of our own voice....and we didn't have anything interesting to say anyway...(not exact quotes - but that was the jist of it).

Never been trolled by a moderator before!

I felt rather slighted.....but like so many times when one is offended, had to really have a good think about whether there was any truth in it.

And if there was....then should I just stop posting?

How do I answer it? To post back to the list, just continues the argument. I have emailed the Moderator off-line to say that I feel a bit miffed....but so what.

It just does not seem that simple a question. I post because I am interested in the subject. I love the discussion, because how ever much I thought I knew on a subject....there is nearly always someone who knows more....so I learn.

But why do you post?

To practise your Catulus?

Ed,
I think the Lyndon Johnson repost is as good as any,
Dear Mr.....
I think you should some insane/unpleasant/idiot, (Choose any description of choice.) is using your identity!
About all I have in common with Catulus is 3 ex wives! Though I did have my moments at The Union I would never claim the powers of Cicero or Catulus.
I think of this and other forums that are conducted in a relaxed helpful friendly manner as a virtual Pub of the old sort where one found people who shared your own predudices and opinions or differed in a friendly "Voltareian" way!
Just keep doing what you do.
Simples.

I post because I'm new to the CVRDA and relatively young (in CVRDA terms) (mid 30's), so come to each discussion with an open mind. I have opinions and am willing and happy to share them. I strongly believe there are plenty of old boat owners out there who would be active and enthusiastic members, but don't realise that there is an association set up with them in mind. My personal priority is the "old" wing, I'm not bothered by vintage/historical perfection (although I can appreciate it) and try by the limited methods available to me to increase the awareness and membership of the CVRDA. My postings relate to any topic where I feel the opinion of someone who until recently had never heard of the CVRDA, might be useful, and help influence a decision to the benefit of the CVRDA.

Ed it must be a different you posting. I think your posts are normally well thought out, interesting and easy to read. You are the last person I would expect to be pulled up by a moderator. You must morph into someone very unpleasant when you talk about photography.

for the opportunity to recycle old jokes and occasionally come up with new ones. The same applies to old boats.

I would suggest asking the moderator for an explanation of his post. It seems to be the sort of thing a moderator is supposed to prevent.

Hi Ed. You seem to have fallen foul of a zealous moderator

This type and all like him are cleverly described here. (I confess I've posted this before but it seems apt and goodnatured fun.

Personally I post I think for most of the usual reasons...

Lonely,
Bored,
Happy,
Drunk,
Should be busy doing something else,
Occasionally think I've something interesting to say,
Trolled,
Trolling,
Feeling clever,
Feeling outraged or need a rant,
Got a question,
Got an answer,
Thought this might amuse you,
" " " " " " annoy you,

But most of all, it's usually because I wish I could be sailing instead.

One could go on and I even discovered a forum about how to define types of forum poster. How sad is that?? :( :D ... This amused me.

Maybe because we are what they call a fencepost tortoise."
"When you're driving along
a country road and you come across a fence post with a tortoise balanced on
top, that's called a fencepost tortoise."

"You know he didn't get up there by himself, he definitely doesn't
belong up there, he doesn't know what to do while he is up there, and you just
have to wonder what kind of idiot put him up there in the first place.
Simples.
