Bottom falling out of the market?

Post by neil »

I was looking at some larger boats at the weekend and was very surprised that the market seems to have collapsed.

Saw some nice 25 footers in the sub £5k bracket. Folkboat and trailer for less than £3k. 1/4 Tonners, GK24, Sadlers at give away prices. 26' Ian Oughtred Gaffer for £15k, would imagine that someone paid the thick end of £40k a few years ago.

Looks like the marine market has crashed badly, luxury goods being sold off cheap - would imagine there's going to be some major bargains this winter.

Has it hit the dinghy market, or do you think people are looking at dinghies instead of going yotting, as it is so much cheaper to run one?

hmmm..

a lot of my club's instructors have gone and formed syndicates and bought yots in the last two years - causing many issues. There could be a reverse kind of recession in dinghy sailing ahead - we should try to cache in on it. As people reign in and do not go on expensive holidays they may value sailing as a low cost but exciting and different way to relax at home.

If so I guess that any ready to go boats will pick up in value.

Of course all markets are falling and will continue to do so for a while yet, there is a shortage of money there is a depression thank you Margaret Thatcher thank you Ronald Regan thank you Tony Blair thank you George Bush thank you Gordon Brown. Even the Navy are bleeding to death as of today even The Ark Royal is being laid up in a matter of weeks/months! Together with several Frigates. Of course if you have cash/savings that can be liquidated, you are sure you will not need to eat and keep warm then you will pick up a bargain but can you run it? Will you have a job many in supposedly secure Government jobs and the professions will not, your pension will not go as far index linked pensions will be unlinked. We are in deep do do.

So market will be for cheap dinghies with low upkeep costs. Sounds right up our street.

Sounds like a job creation scheme Pat. Perhaps you can get one of those new apprentices in to help. A degree in varnish scraping.......

I'm after selling, not buying especially if I've not got a job - selling us off to the private sector is the government's way of getting rid of some of the 25,000 jobs

(if you can afford the ferry) or can sail there, 'puffins revenge' brewed by the pub on Lundy Island and properly called 'Lundy Experience' - most therapeutic! Although I see it is no longer actually brewed there....
