J classes in the Solent

Post by roger »

I took my father down to Calshot yesterday to watch the Js. ten minutes before the start we could see the boats in the distance and someone told us they had moved the course to West Solent not centrall as advertised. So we trundled off to Lepe beach hoping to see them a bit better. We could see them and they did look huge against the spectator boats but they were set a short W/L course and came nowhere near us.
We could see the towering rigs(you couldnt miss them) but even with bins we couldnt really see those beautiful hulls carving through the water.
What a shame from a spectators point of view a round the cans course taking up more of the solent would have been a better spectacle.
We gave up after it became obvious they wouldnt come any closer.
Never mind a chance to spend time with my father is never wasted time.

They are incredible. When they did the anniversary RTI some years back I launched our Laser at Lymington and sailed down to Hurst with my son. When the Js appeared round the back of Tennyson down we went out and sailed with them in through Hurst. Laser vs Js some contrast!

I spent 1985 as a paid hand on Velsheda. Numerous charters round the Island. Also did the aborted attempt of the '85 Fastnet on her and a great trip to the Channel Islands. Happy memories of living on Smoked Salmon and other leftovers from various charters.

No engine in those days
