International Canoes built by Nunn Brothers at Waldringfield

Post by ACB »

Alex has just been talking to a (very) elderly gentleman who worked for Nunn Brothers in the 1930s and remembers working on canoes that they built for Cyril Stollery.

Thought I would mention this in case it is of interest to anyone.

Nothing in the IC records for any boats built by Nunn Brothers...or boats owned by Cyril Stollery.

But there are lots of gaps, so it would most probably be in one of those.

As a matter of interest, there was an IC built by Bathurst in Tewkesbury.....who built my old sculling boat.

If I get the chance I will look through the IC history book and see if that turns up anything.

cheers

though of course Zenith is a Nunn Bros boat. But she was originally built as a 'B' class and adopted as an IC in the 1930s.

I'd imagine that Nunn Bros built more than on 'B' class canoes, but I think Zenith is the only one also be considered as an IC.

Neil,

do you have an updated version of the IC boat register with more details for the classic and vintage boats?

the version that I have got from the IC association has very little info at all.

Something in the back of my mind says you did some more work on the list....was that right?

cheers

I do have a list somewhere. I have a feeling it didn't get transferred to this laptop, I'll have to go through the back up hardrives to see if I can find it. I only did the boats up to the Avalons (but it's incomplete)

Here is a mention of Cyril Stollery racing an IC in 1937, in Uffa Fox's "Racing Cruising and Design". Does not say she was a Nunn boat, of course.

"Radiant was tuned very efficiently and seemed to be a fast all-round boat.....Cyril Stollery won the Novices' Cup with Radiant, and Radiant took the Mates' Average.."

That's a connection I never made, despite being a customer of Seamark Nunn and knowing Waldringfield for thirty years and more!

I'll ask next time I drop in - probably Thursday.

If Alex has time or it is at all possible, it would be good to go and talk to the old boy again with a tape recorder and get his memories set down. These are the sort of memories we should try not to lose.

We called on Ken today; he was very clear about building racing canoes for Cyril Stollery and recalled that they were very expensive. He was a teenaged apprentice, allowed to help with the easy bits, but he recalled a lot of careful precision work.

Is Cyril Stollery in some way connected to the Stollery "dynasty" in model boats racing (Fleetwood class, M Class Radio Controlled Mdels and th like) ?

I seem to recall Cyril Stollery having a Dragon or two at Waldringfield in the Sixties?
