Re: Jack Holt 'Vagabond'
Just an update on the restoration / repair..
Having striped and varnished the cockpit and decks in summer of 2010, the boat has been stood outside but covered until last weekend. It has now been in my garage for a week and has had chance to dry out.
I inspected its condition and although some of the varnish was flaking on the fore decks, the cockpit seemed to be holding up quite well. So as it was now dry I started to scrape away the layers of blue paint on the hull. looks like it was previously painted silver and before that a light cream colour. Then I found an amazing light mustard colour which I assume was the original coat. Since the vagabond has burnt orange sails it would be a lovely contrast with the light mustard.
I have read Hawk's restoration of his boat in Australia and also Mike Smiths Wayfarer restoration. These have both inspired me to restore rather than repair this classic.
The decks have been removed as they will be replaced with new ply to give a much better appearance. The frame below is in remarkable condition considering it is over 50 years old! Only a minor piece of rot where the transom meets the port side. This should be an easy fix.
All furniture has been removed in order for it to be sanded and varnished along with the centre board casing which will need re sealing before it is re attached.
There are two small areas of rot in the port side hull (20cm x 5 cm), my options now are to patch these by scarfing in a repair or to replace the entire panel. Any thoughts ??
The two panels which make up the floor of the boat seem to be cracking when I apply pressure so these will be replaced entirely.
Although the boat is now completely stripped, it looks like there is minimal work required to get her on the water ready for Jack Holts Centenary event in July.
I'll post some photos soon and keep you all updated on my progression.

Re: Jack Holt 'Vagabond'
To all you Vagabonds out there (the boats, not the owners!!)..
I want a nice picture, colour if possible, of a vagabond being sailed that I can use in the Jack Holt talk at the Dinghy Show. Any help on this would be really great! You'll also see another posting from me elsewhere on a 'call for info'.... but thanks in anticipation.

Max....
sadly the picture you refer too is a scan that is of rather poor quality - blown up on the big screen that would look gruesome!
Vagabond 61... I'll be doing that anyway BUT.... I need the pictures like...now 9or at least in the next 2 weeks)
Cheers
