International 14 No.521 Tip Toes
International 14 No.521 Tip Toes
I am new to this forum and I have just aquired this 1948 I14. She has been given to me by a friend in a hope that I might restore her to sailing condition. She is complete (with wooden mast) and some old sails. Luckily I have the space to store her and work on her and I am a furniture restorer/conservator, so have the necessary skills. I currently sail a wooden Wayfarer, which I race at Hayling Island SC. Please can anyone who has the knowlege point me in the the right direction for its history and where I might get more information of 14s of that era. Many thanks in advance.

Welcome to the cvrda John,
We have a wealth of knowledgable people on this site who I am sure will point you in the right direction. In fact one or two may well remember your boat.

Don't remember the boat myself, but I think you have something of a find there. 521 was called Tiptoes, but also at some point Almanak. It was originally registered to Colin Ratsey, then later by C.M.B. Charles. She was built by Uffa Fox to an American design by H C Hall. Suggest you get hold of a copy of the International 14 book 1928-89, for further details, but in the meantime:
"The 1948 POW was interesting for a notable duel between 'Martlet' and 'Tiptoes'. 'Tiptoes' was a development of the 'flat iron' 'Hawk', and was fitted with a bridge thwart, on which were the fairleads and a snubbing winch. It was probably this device which was the cause of her downfall. 'Tiptoes' led until the penultimate leg when 'Martlet' caught up with her. A heavy squall then struck, and both boats, flying spinnakers, roared away in a cloud of spray. 'Tiptoes' started to roll, and it is thought her bridge prevented the crew from moving aft, she broached, and that was that. "
Clearly a boat with a pedigree.

is this the mystery boat that we were all getting excited about recently following an email in from Sharon Cahill? If so, great to have the boat identified, can you post some pictures soon (even pre restoration) so that we can all oggle at them!

From the posts it seems as though there may be two similar design of the same vintage out there Tip Toes & Hobby Hawke, coincidence or what?
Simples.
Re: International 14 No.521 Tip Toes
Thank you all for your repies so far.
This has got me quite enthusiastic, although this might be dampened when I get her home in the next few weeks and find out the amount of work needed. I shall post photos and shall probably be asking many more questions.
The mention of Uffa Fox got me digging out some pre-war books that I have by him that have chapters on fourteens. The thing that staggers me is just how heavy those boats are, at 800lbs I wonder how they ever planed. I guess that a lot of the weight is in the iron plate and the class rules must have determined a minimum weight. Interesting when UF is quoted that the only place for weight is in a steam-roller. I know that this changed post war; but when?
She is double planked and multi ribbed and still has that snubbing winch on the thwart. Sailing her will be very interesting and should provide the fleet of modern 14s at my club with some amusement!
I shall try and get hold of a copy of that book on fourteens via Abebooks or Amazon.

Please help me. I have been to have a look at Tiptoes this afternoon and took loads of images. How do I post them on this forum and is there any size restriction? I shall be collecting her and bringing her home in the next couple of weeks.

BTW,
The plate thing changed to wood prewar when Peter Scott and Beecher Moore had a wooden plate made and painted it bronze a great pantomime struggling with it and well described in Peter SCott's "Eye of the Wind", they also did a prescient spoof alloy mast by paiting a wooden one silver!

Take two after some food and a glass of wine. Yes she has a wooden centreboard. Let's hope that these images appear:-

Re: International 14 No.521 Tip Toes
I have more images, but these probably give you a good idea of what she is. I was pleasantly surprised by her condition as she is relatively sound structurally. The mast will need some work as it is splitting along a construction joint, but it is straight. Ratsey cotton sails will serve as patterns at least. The previous owner and friend has owned her since 1967 and he gave me a copy of the book "The International Fourteen 1928-1964". Altogether I am quite chuffed
