Seafly Racing Dinghy web site

Post by PeterT »

Hello, I have just (April 2010) launched a new web site http://seaflymemories.org.uk/ with the aim of preserving information about the Seafly sailing dinghy, particularly those built between 1960 and 1990. Apart from my own boats and records, there's also a good photo gallery from Newcastle Yacht Club in Northern Island. I'm trying to identify and contact Clubs where Seaflys were sailed, or are still sailed. Any information with regard to Clubs and boats (existing or sadly deceased) would be gratefully received. Here is a poster for the site, a full sized version is available from the web site... Image

Hello Peter and welcome to the CVRDA. I seem to remember a seafly at the Easter weekend event at Rock a few years ago. It wont be long before DavidH is along to tell you they are a bandit on handicap.

I've just come back from a weekend in Norfolk. There were several Seaflies at Blakeney sailing club.

I think the SeaFly up at Rock is the same one that sails at Saltash.

In pretty good nick and sailed well.....it does to well in the racing there.

Have tried to interest him in CVRDA racing in the past, but no luck so far.

cheers

oh how I hate to dissapoint BUT - I don't think I've ever actually championed the Seafly as a handicap bandit, though if I thought they were I'd have looked long and hard at one.

Now the Seafire - yes, guilty as charg ed, both the boat and myself. Now that IS a bandit, be in no doubt on that. And yes, in the past I've beaten the drum for the boat....though they do need a bit of breeze as there is a lot of wetted area in those large flat panels aft.

But would it be a good cvrda boat? Not so sure - maybe.

would love to see the seafly along at events though

Hi Ed
Seafly at Rock is the same as the one at Saltash. It is owned by an ex hornet sailor from Mayflower Dr. Chirs Lloyd. His wife's parents live at Rock hence it being seen at two places. The boat is at the present time up for sale details on Apollo Duck and Boats and Outboards.
Cheers Al

Thanks to those supplying Seafly info, I'll follow up the leads, all you can provide are very welcome.

Re. the Seafire, there is a S. Devon Boatbuilder's pamphlet on the Mayfly page of my Seafly web site which features a dinghy called the 4'1', was this an early version of the Seafire? If the info on the CVRDA Dinghy Index is correct and the Seafire is/was a 14' boat with 120 sq foot sail area (same as a Seafly) and racing on a Handicap similar to the Enterprise or 420... well I wish I was racing one!

Cheers, Peter

Peter,

In case you hadn't guessed, Dave C has a Seafire tucked away up on the East Coast. That this boat makes a Phantom look slow on handicap should come as no surprise- they do things like that up there!!

But when (vulture in waiting) Mr C see's an event worthy of his time you can be certain that the boat will appear - and you can be equally certain that I'll be there to capture the moment on film!

I'll share the photos around..........

If and when David C decides to bring this boat out we may have to call an extra ordinary meeting of the handicap committee :D
