Merlin Rocket, Sail number 1390 - Does anyone remember her?

Post by julie.griffiths »

Hi. We have bought a Merlin Rocket - Sail number 1390 named 'Flame' but don't have any documentation with her. We would love to know more about Flame's history so if anyone can recall her we would love to hear from you. There is a sticker inside the boat for M.R.O.A 1988 with a number 2206 if that helps. Any ideas on where to start the search would also be appreciated.

the yearbook has 1390 down as a proctor mkXII built by Chippendale at or around 1962. She's listed as 'Flame'.

Post your query on the Merlin Rocket forum as there's many people there who've been in the class for very many years and may be able to give more info.

The Mk. XII was designed by Ian Procter essentially for inland water sailing. It was not as powerful as the Mk.XI and had more rounded bilges to give less wetted area. It was a quick tacking boat and this design won the "light weather" champs in 1964. The design has seen a revival with vintage Merlin helms in recent years and preforms well in the right hands.

Many thanks to all who have sent in information on Flame. The more we learn the more we want to know, so if anyone has any more recollections of our boat, we would love to hear from you.

All the best :D
