Rot...

From what I remember of wooden GP14's, the first places to look are at the bottom of the transom and around the mast step. If stored bow up, the stern rots, bow down and the water collects round the mast area.

Also, check along the sides of the centreboard case - you'll need to take the bottom boards out to get a good look.

On deck, check there are no soft areas under the breakwater on the foredeck.

I'm sure some of our GP14 experts will be along to point out anywhere else there can be problems.

yes, mast foot can go bad quite easily for the reasons Rupert described. get the floorboards out and check them and the floor, all along all the joins. Pintle and gudgeon etc.

If you want a double hander I have a complete kestrel you can have for free. It does need some work, but nothing massive. I really need the space.

Hi, This boat is about 5 mins from where I work, http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/GP14-sailing- ... 7675.l2557 Nessa thanks for offer, I have no facilities for repairing a wooden boat ( unless it is GRP ? ) the Kestrel I believe is a good dinghy for a novice. Their is a combi-trailer with this boat and a cover (not in the listing).

Trebor,

I think Rup has got the main problems. Rot from neglect. Faves round the mast step and transom floor area. Leakage round the centerboard slot. Prefrebaly you want tone the Cantre boatrd case has been done, taken out and epoxied back in

Next biggest problem is damage, bodge up's and wear ans tear. A lot out owned by casual sailors so get a hard life.

Look for a nice mast, good sails, plenty of buoyancy (bags in a series 1) and a good trailer. Happy days.

The boat has been withdrawn on Ebay so you either bought it or missed it!

Hi, The dinghy did not sell, the one offer that is on the page is going to see boat on friday, the seller is going to give him first refusal, I am going tomorrow night, but will not know if I can have it until after friday.
I have messaged seller the dinghy as been fully refurbished by a proffessional boat builder, also the dinghy as never been stored outside, but I will still check all the things highlighted on here.

I bet it's a "Bazza boat" - Don Marine to all those not from around these parts. Looks in good nick from the photos. A GP14 would suit you very well assuming you can find a crew.
Best wishes

Hi Paul, I hope I can find crew, last saturday week I crewed three races a 3rd 1st and a second, this was in a Magno, the first race we actually led for 2 laps, then capsized but still finished 3rd, I would not have thought of buying a larger dinghy before joining a club, I now have some where to store boats. I have seen boat no wiser for seeing it, the finish is not what I would have expected from a professional boat builder, the centre board is not fitted, the floor boards were screwed down ( so no chance of looking underneath ), the owner said boat had not been in water for over ten years, along side of centre board case their is a patch both sides of what in a wall would look like damp, white powdery stuff, their is a patch on aft deck where their had been an hole for outboard, over all it looked "messed with", so I think I will leave it.

we will soon be putting a grp GP14 on ebay, cvrda eligible, needs minor amounts of work to get afloat, more to make it pretty. Good sails. Let me know if you're interested.

You are welcome to view the kestrel anytime. It is not as stable as the GP, but there is a spare mainsail which you could get cut down which makes it more manageable. It needs a patch in the side tank and a coat of epoxy over the floor. I have taken off a few fittings and the spars suit aft main, but it's easy to convert.

Let me know if interested in either, Nessa

Hi Nessa, interested in either boat, the GP sounds the best bet if it is more stable, I did RYA level 1 in a GP, I will not be able to do anything until after bank holiday though. Thanks Rob

Hi Moggy, Thanks for offer but I was not looking for a GP 14 specifically, this one was a couple of minutes from where I work, it looked a bargain for £395, I am not looking for a project, the one Nessa is selling is GRP and just wants tidying. Rob.
