1962 Wooden Racing Dinghy

Post by DerekRomo »

I have recently come to own a wooden racing dinghy from the early 60's. It has been stored in a garage for the last 31 years. Can you
point me in the right direction. How can I assess its value? There are two sails, the larger one has an emblem in black that looks like a capital A with a tail. They both have a red semi-circle sewn on them that says Ratsey & Lapthorn Sailmakers, Gosport England, 1962. The larger sail has the number 20426 and the smaller sail has 20427.

I think you have an Albacore from your description of the sail emblem.

Try this link to confirm the size of the boat (it might not have the correct sails) http://www.cvrda.org/wp-cvrda/dinghydata/albacore/

Value will depend on the condition of the hull, what equipment it comes with in terms of sails spars, trailer and trolley, and of course how much someone is willing to pay.

Hi Derek,

Glad you have made it to the forum.

A further thought I had since our email communication was to say that the Albacore is still going strong, and you may well be able to find out lots about the class here:

Certainly looks like an Albacore. Still raced as a class and have an active class association.

She looks in good condition to but without a close look its not easy to tell. Are there any signs of dark wood around the centreboard case or at the back where water may have laid for any length of time?

Values will vary depending on condition and who is looking. Older wooden boats tend not to fetch what we would like to think they are worth. They look great but not everyone wants the work.

That looks like a Fairey Albacore in very original condition too. From the pictures I'm guessing it is not in the UK but the Albacore is a strong active class in Canada and the USA.
The links above are for the UK association
http://albacore.org/ is the International Albacore Assoc.
and http://albacore.ca/ is the Canadian assoc.

If you register for the forum (free) you can post the request for info and links to the photos there and also advertise it where someone may well be interested in buying it.

Derik,
That certainly looks like an older Albacore, I notice it has a CF hull registration and a California Licence plate on the trailer.
I am resident in California The US Albacore association has a web page with a forum on here:
http://usaa.albacore.org/forum

There are several Yacht clubs in Southern California that have Albacores , But I do not think their numbers are large enough to have organized fleets.

The Albacore Association will give you pointers to clubs if you want to sail it and also will give you an idea of its value if you want to sell it.

Derik,
I see you have already contacted the USAlbacore association.
Do not be too put off by the some what negative response by the poster from Santa Barbara.
There are other clubs in the San Pedro area and the Mission Bay Yacht Club in San Diego that have large contingent of wooden boats, Mainly Thistles, Lightning's, and Snipes that are not put off by wooden construction.

An Albacore....yes.

An early one......not sure, not that early as it doesn't have any stern decks which very early ones had, but from before they started doing longitudional veneers on the outside, so prior to 65-66ish

So early 60s would seem right to me.

Also, not a Fairey finished boat. Most probably supplied to the US as a unfinished Fairey shell.

cheers

Derik,
I noticed your boat in another advert, it turns out you are only 16 miles from my house.
If you are interested I can come over and inspect your boat ,and give you an idea of it's condition.
